  • Snow blankets area again

the Staff of The News|Updated Feb 14, 2020

The Farmers' Almanac predicted this winter would be "filled with so many ups and downs on the thermometer, it may remind you of a 'Polar Coaster.'" Welcome to the exciting portion of our seasonal ride. After a mild beginning, the High Plains experienced its second icy blast in two weeks on Tuesday. Area residents awoke to several inches of snow, which closed schools and slowed traffic across eastern New Mexico and the Texas Panhandle. Texico had received about 3 inches of...

  • Muleshoe rider taking on world

    Kevin Wilson - Staff|Updated Feb 11, 2020

Editor’s note: Following publication of this article online, Kasel’s parents posted on Facebook that he would not be able to compete due to injury but was still planning to attend. A few years ago, Dalton Kasel was just another kid in west Texas between towns. "I grew up in Muleshoe," Kasel said. "We lived about 15 miles outside of town. We didn't go to Muleshoe except for groceries. I went to school at Farwell, and my siblings went to school in Lazbuddie." A few months ag...

  • Rivalry renewed

    Peter Stein - Staff writer|Updated Feb 11, 2020

CLOVIS — There was Clovis guard Bubba Jennings playing with a head injury and bloody uniform at Hobbs in 1979. Forty years later, there was a packed and loud Rock Staubus Gymnasium watching Clovis hold on to beat the Eagles by five. And there were other Clovis/Hobbs boys basketball classics before 1979 and since last year’s regular-season matchup at the Rock, including the Wildcats beating Hobbs for the 2019 District 4-5A tournament championship and Hobbs returning the...

  • New airliner flying to Denver

the Staff of The News|Updated Feb 11, 2020

CLOVIS — The Clovis Municipal Airport will have a new carrier beginning May 1. It’s not the one city commissioners approved in October and Dallas is not its destination. The U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded Key Lime Air of Denver a two-year Essential Air Service contract for an annual subsidy of $4.4 million. The new carrier will provide Clovis passengers travel to and from Denver International Airport. DOT also extended the contract of Boutique Air, which provides service between Clovis and Dallas/Fort...

  • Music sound of human experience

    Tom McDonald|Updated Feb 11, 2020

“There is geometry in the humming of the strings. There is music in the spacing of the spheres.” — Pythagoras Between the impeachment in D.C., and the debacle in Iowa and the gun-toting protesters in Santa Fe, politics is on overkill. I don’t know about you but I could use a break — so let us escape from the tones of our discontent to the tunes of our better selves. Several years ago on a visit to El Paso, I decided to cross the border into Mexico, back when it could be done without a passport or papers and was an e...

  • No one policy good for everyone

    Kent McManigal|Updated Feb 11, 2020

Did you enjoy our recent winter storm? I did, but I know a lot of people didn’t. Most people are not fans of cold and snow. I don’t like temperatures over 85 degrees Fahrenheit, especially if there’s any trace of humidity, while other people love hot weather. Variety is the spice of life and I’m willing to deal with things I don’t like, without much complaint, so others can enjoy the things they like. Since no one can control the weather, anyway, it’s a healthy...

  • Out-of-court transparency encouraging step

    Albuquerque Journal|Updated Feb 11, 2020

The state Senate’s unanimous support last week of legislation that would make the state’s out-of-court settlements more transparent is an encouraging step forward for New Mexicans who want to know how their tax dollars are being spent. The state House must not let this good-government bill die before the end of the legislative session next week. For far too long, out-of-court settlements between plaintiffs and the state General Services Department’s Risk Management Division have been subject to a gag order of at least...

the Staff of The News|Updated Feb 11, 2020

  • Snow again wreaks havoc on hardwood

The Staff of The News|Updated Feb 11, 2020

CLOVIS — The most recent snow wiped out Tuesday night’s area high school basketball schedule, although Farwell and Vega decided to beat the punch by moving their games up a day to Monday. Ten of the other 12 games slated for Tuesday night — six boys, six girls — have been rescheduled. The exception is a non-district doubleheader sending Grady to Roy/Mosquero, which has been canceled. Portales High will now host Lovington in District 4-4A games tonight at the RAC, beginning with the girls contest at 5 p.m. Meantime,...

  • Prep swimming: Clovis girls repeat as district champs

The Staff of The News|Updated Feb 11, 2020

HOBBS — Both the Clovis girls and boys swim teams faced adversity in last Saturday’s District 3/4 championship meet at Hobbs High School. And each team stared it down. Especially the girls, who overcame an early and controversial disqualification to win their second consecutive district title, nudging past Las Cruces 144 points to 139. “It was pretty unbelievable,” Clovis head coach Gordy Westerberg said. Clovis’ boys team finished second, trailing only Hobbs and improving on last year’s third-place district...

  • Portales school district concludes worry-free audit

    Kevin Wilson - Staff|Updated Feb 11, 2020

PORTALES — The finance department at Portales Municipal Schools uses too many staples in its documents, and John McKinley added that smiley faces on receipts have got to go. That was how McKinley, a CPA with Woodard, Cowen and Co., noted a worry-free 2018-19 audit of the Portales district at Monday’s school board meeting. The audit had no findings for the second consecutive year, and McKinley said the only reason he was there was the state required an in-person report. “Control structures are still very strong here,...

  • ENMU hoops to face tough tests

    Peter Stein - Staff writer|Updated Feb 11, 2020

As the games become fewer they get all the more important. There are six games and less than three weeks left in the regular season for both the Eastern New Mexico University men’s and women’s basketball teams. As the Lone Star Conference tournament grows closer, the games that will help the Greyhounds get there are more crucial. Especially for the Eastern men’s team, sitting squarely atop the LSC playoff bubble with a 6-15 overall record, 6-10 LSC, and currently on a...

  • Education Foundation kindling the flame

    Cindy Kleyn-Kennedy|Updated Feb 11, 2020

It’s well known that educators typically dip into their own pockets to make purchases for their students and classrooms. With the complexities and restraints common to procurement in public education, it’s often the easiest way. However, since the Clovis Municipal Schools Education Foundation established the teacher grants some years back, it’s changed the way teachers can enhance learning in their classrooms. The CMS Education Foundation is a separate entity from...

  • Greyhounds plate first 2020 win

The Staff of The News|Updated Feb 11, 2020

BY THE STAFF OF THE NEWS PORTALES — To say that Texas A&M International baseball coach Ryan Flynn went to the bullpen early and often over the weekend would be an understatement. The Dustdevils’ skipper used eight pitchers in a winning effort on Saturday, then came back with nine hurlers on Sunday. This time, though, Eastern New Mexico University plated seven first-inning runs and the Greyhounds made them stand up for a 9-6 Lone Star Conference win at Greyhound Field, their first victory of the season. Left fielder Jude...

  • Ram girls top Goddard for 2-0 district mark

The Staff of The News|Updated Feb 11, 2020

ROSWELL — Portales girls coach Wade Fraze is thrilled to be off to a good start in District 4-4A, but says the work is just beginning. The Lady Rams rolled to a 10-point, first-quarter lead on Saturday night, but had to hang on late to edge Roswell Goddard 50-47 behind 14 points from sophomore guard Taris Rippee and 12 from sophomore Kylyie Paden. The win, in a makeup of a snowout earlier in the week, put PHS (16-6, 2-0 district) in position to take sole possession of first place against rival Lovington (11-9, 2-0), a game...

  • Weekend prep roundup: Broncho boys pull rout over Hondo

The Staff of The News|Updated Feb 11, 2020

HONDO — The Grady boys basketball team got back on the winning track on Saturday night — and in a big way. Losers of three in a row in rugged District 6-1A, the Bronchos made short work of host Hondo, building a 12-point lead after one quarter and cruising to an 80-48 non-district victory. Junior Isaiah Mitchell (25 points), senior Chisum Rush (21) and junior Chad Beccera (16) did for most of the damage for Grady (10-9). Meantime, senior Thomas Hernandez scored 16 points for the Eagles (14-8). In the girls matchup, Grady...

Seniors Lara Mason (18 points), Emily Jackson (14) and Anita Knoll (12) led the way for the Lady Longhorns (32-0, 10-0 district), ranked second in Texas 2A. Senior...

  • EPCOR: 'No health concern' from chemicals

    Kevin Wilson - Staff|Updated Feb 11, 2020

CLOVIS — The city’s water provider informed customers over the weekend about the presence of the “forever chemical” PFAS in a number of its wells. EPCOR said it has taken 10 wells out of commission for now after tests indicated each had a level between 4 and 7 parts per trillion of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances. The Environmental Protection Agency does not have a requirement to treat PFAS or a drinking water standard, but recommends people consume water with concentrations of less than 70 PPT combined of PFAS...
