  • Greyhounds fall to Cameron, top Midwestern State

The Staff of The News|Updated Feb 2, 2019

LAWTON, Okla. — There’s never a good time to have a scoring drought, but the Eastern New Mexico team certainly found a bad time to have it. Tyus Momoh scored 14 points to lead four in double figures, and Cameron rallied form a 16-point deficit in the final nine minutes to score an 88-84 win Thursday night at Aggie Gym. The Greyhounds (7-11, 4-6), who went scoreless for the final two minutes, fell into a tie with the Aggies for seventh place in the Lone Star Conference. The...

  • Cats jump out to 2-0 start in district

    Peter Stein|Updated Feb 2, 2019

CLOVIS — Better pace yourselves, Clovis boys basketball team. You expended lots of energy and emotion Friday night and there’s still plenty of season left. Then again, you were playing Hobbs, so never mind. There was indeed emotion and energy galore Friday night at a jam-packed Rock Staubus Gymnasium, but the Wildcats needed every bit of it to hold on and beat Hobbs 88-83. Like a mystery novel unfolding with surprising twists and turns, just when it appeared the game was goi...

  • ENMU women's basketball tops Cameron

The Staff of The News|Updated Feb 2, 2019

LAWTON, Okla. - Sophomore Alivia Lewis had 17 points, and knocked down the go-ahead free throw Thursday night as Eastern New Mexico defeated Cameron 68-67 on the road for a season sweep in their Lone Star Conference series. Treyanna Clay had a game-high 23 points and went 11-of-12 from the line for the Greyhounds (14-5, 9-2), who moved into sole possession of second place in the LSC entering Saturday's game at Midwestern State. The Greyhounds, however, fell Saturday at...

  • Texico grabs sweep in 7-2A openers

    Peter Stein|Updated Feb 2, 2019

TEXICO — A win over Clayton Friday night wasn’t going to define the Texico girls basketball team’s season. And a loss wouldn’t have been catastrophic. That stated, Friday night’s 61-44 home victory over Clayton was as big as it gets for the Lady Wolverines in a Feb. 1 game. They won their District 7-2A opener while also taking the rematch of last year’s District 5-3A title game, won by Clayton. And the Lady Wolves gained some more confidence as they forge into the regular seas...

  • ENMU adding new fundraising drive

The Staff of The News|Updated Feb 2, 2019

PORTALES — Eastern New Mexico University’s athletics department is establishing a new fundraising drive to fund only postseason expenses for Greyhound athletic programs. An address to “Greyhound Nation” by Athletic Director Greg Waggoner posted online at the ENMU Athletics website discusses the Champions Club and its necessity. In the fundraising request, Waggoner noted all but one Greyhound team has made a postseason in the last two-and-a-half years, and the travel has add...

  • Greyhound softball splits to open season

The Staff of The News|Updated Feb 2, 2019

RIO RANCHO — The Kara Zeiter era of Eastern New Mexico softball ended its first day with a split, as the Greyhound offense posted a four-run sixth to claim a 4-1 win over Adams State to close out Friday at the ENMU Kickoff Classic at Rio Rancho High School. Hanna Gary pitched the final 10.1 innings of the day, with 3.1 innings of relief work in ENMU’s 3-1 loss to Fort Lewis and a complete-game seven-hitter in the nightcap. The Greyhounds finished up the Classic with afternoon games against Oklahoma Baptist and Fort Lew...

  • Clovis girls suffer pair of district losses

The Staff of The News|Updated Feb 2, 2019

The first week of District 4-5A play was not terribly kind to the Clovis girls basketball team, who dropped a pair on the road — 40-13 at Carlsbad Tuesday and 77-34 at Hobbs Friday. Not-so-Super-Tuesday CARLSBAD — Carlsbad extended its winning streak to 13 games with its 27-point home win over Clovis in the district opener for both teams. The Cavegirls had a terrible start to the game, beginning with a 3-0 lead and going into the half trailing by four, 13-9. Carlsbad got a lit...

  • Greyhound baseball squad picked for fifth in LSC poll

The Staff of The News|Updated Feb 2, 2019

RICHARDSON, Texas — West Texas A&M is the favorite to defend the Lone Star Conference baseball title, but voters in the LSC poll expect a challenge from Texas A&M-Kingsville. The Thursday poll, comprised of 18 voters from a pool of LSC coaches, sports information directors and media representatives, allotted 10 first-place votes to the Buffaloes and 117 total points. West Texas A&M was 40-14 overall last year with a 20-4 LSC record and hosted both the LSC and the South Central Regional Championships last season. Eastern N...

  • ENMU softball picked for ninth in LSC poll

The Staff of The News|Updated Feb 2, 2019

RICHARDSON, Texas — Angelo State, winners of the Lone Star Conference softball title for the last two years, were again the favorite in the LSC's preseason poll. But the results released Wednesday don't show consensus about the likeliest team to challenge the Rambelles. Eastern New Mexico was picked for ninth place. Angelo State, which went 53-9 overall and 25-5 in conference en route to a South Central Regional title, received 12 of 28 first-place votes to score 282 points in the poll decided by conference coaches, sports i...

  • Despite confusion, Portales girls take easy win over Taos

The Staff of The News|Updated Feb 2, 2019

SANTA ROSA — It would be a fair assumption that Portales and Taos’ girls basketball teams don’t know much about each other. They proved it Tuesday night at a neutral-site game in Santa Rosa, as nobody knew which team was playing which. In what was counted as the varsity game eventually, Portales took a 74-24 victory in a final tuneup before District 4-4A play. Portales coach Wade Fraze said it was a strange, confusing night, and something he’d never experienced as a coach. “When we went into the locker room for halftime,...

  • ENMU adds women's soccer transfer Mendez

The Staff of The News|Updated Feb 2, 2019

PORTALES — The Eastern New Mexico women’s soccer team is adding a transfer from a somewhat unexpected place — Lone Star Conference rival West Texas A&M. The team announced defender Makenzie Mendez will join the Greyhounds for her junior year in a school release. Mendez will not have to sit out a year because she was in good academic standing and received a written release from the Lady Buff program. "We are excited to welcome Makenzie to our program," said ENMU Head Coach Joshua Smith. "Her strong work ethic, positive attit...

The Staff of The News|Updated Feb 2, 2019

LUBBOCK — Senior sprinter Danee Bustos set a personal record, and came up just short of a school record in the 60-meter dash as the Eastern New Mexico indoor track and field teams competed Friday in the Texas Tech Open. The first day of the two-day meet was mostly sprinting events. Bustos was 27th out of 86 runners overall in the event, but came in sixth among the 21 competitors from Lone Star Conference schools. Her time of 7.82 was just .07 seconds behind the program record held by Dominique Zamora. Senior Travonne A...
