  • Resolution to be more humble might not be out of order

    Curtis Shelburne|Updated Feb 3, 2017

No surprise, but the words of Scripture have just been validated yet again in my life. I promise, I’d not been tempted upon the arrival of February, which is a full two weeks past the time most folks break their resolutions, to congratulate myself on keeping any of my New Year’s resolutions. You see, one New Year’s Day many years ago, I resolved never to make any New Year’s resolutions. As tribute, no doubt, to my incredible self-discipline, may I say that, though I’ve fa...

  • Decline in virtue one of the tragedies of today

    Judy Brandon|Updated Feb 3, 2017

What has happened to virtue these days? Once I had an appointment at a doctor’s office and arrived to a full waiting room. All but one of the 10 chairs in the waiting room was taken. After signing in at the desk, I turned, spotted the vacant chair and settled in for the wait. Next to me sat a tall lanky young man about 15 or 16 years old. He was by far the youngest patient in the room. Stretched out in the chair, he crossed his long legs foot on top of foot. His angular p...

  • Bans, tariffs won't make jobs

    John Stossel|Updated Feb 2, 2017

No! The bubble burst. My fantasy died. I wasn’t a big Donald Trump backer — on TV I have called him a bully, a narcissist, etc. — but his first days were thrilling. Finally, a president who meant it when he said he’d cut red tape that kills growth, a man who mocks political correctness and sneers at leftist reporters. Finally, an executive choosing good people: Andy Puzder, Scott Pruitt, Betsy DeVos, Mick Mulvaney, Mike Pompeo ... These are not the political hacks I’ve come to expect from D.C. — not the smug bureaucracy...

Among the eventual creations is the tool that a cowboy of daring and impatient character is bound to study and use. The Way of the Forked Wand is not a subtle art, but it is a complex and...
