  • Other mother provides inspiration to persevere

In the last few weeks, I missed my husband’s call from overseas too many times. If it’s just once or twice I don’t mind, but if it happens on numerous occasions, I feel frustrated and disappointed. I wanted to share our excitement about an upcoming trip to Atlanta to attend my oldest daughter’s cheerleading competition. My husband didn’t know, so I felt sad that he couldn’t participate, even if from a distance. The prospect of a long car ride with my five little “angels” wasn’t really inspiring, and the idea of spending... Full story

  • Woman’s faith will live on through generations

I was touched this past week by an entire family’s faith through difficult circumstances and the example it gives to us all. One day after the Calton family buried their beloved mother and grandmother Clytie Calton, the family had banded together for the unpleasant task of searching the ruins of the Calton family home for family treasures and heirlooms. Mrs. Calton was injured a week earlier and eventually died from injuries she received in a natural gas explosion at the home. In talking with family members this week it b... Full story

  • Kenyan violence showing no sign of dying down

Most observers hoped the violence that flared up on Kenya following a flawed election Dec. 27 that dubiously returned President Mwai Kibaki to power would eventually calm down. But attacks and counterattacks last weekend in the Rift Valley, most notably in the tourist gateway city of Nakuru, which was considered safe until a few days ago, suggest the tensions tearing Kenya apart are more deeply rooted than most outside observers had suspected. The violence is yet more evidence — as if more were needed — that beneath the surfa...

Portales Springs was one of the most important watering holes on this trail. It was not used frequently, as most cattlemen and other travelers preferred to follow the Goodnight-Loving Trai...
