    Sharna Johnson CMI columnist

Dog breeds, dog bites, homes for retired K-9s and animal killing contests are some of the animal-related issues that have made their way to the state legislature this year. Regardless of one's stance on animal issues, it's always interesting to take a peek at what our lawmakers' think is important in the non-human spectrum. Here are some of the proposals affecting animals and related humans: - House Bill 63 — Changes to state statute governing vicious animals proposed by Rep. Yvette Herrell, R-Alamogordo, would prevent l... Full story

  • Navigation easier than old days

I guess I now have a vehicle with navigation. More accurately, I figured out my smart phone has a navigation app that actually works pretty good. With the hands-free device I bought with Christmas money, I can press a couple of buttons and speak a destination to get directions to my destination. After I missed my first turn in Santa Fe, I decided that the next exit would get me where I was going, but I wanted to be sure. I managed to get the destination entered and then was amazed when the thing began giving me turn-by-turn...

  • Children's TV morals a concern

The plot of the show was, on the surface, pretty sordid. That actually holds true for all of the several plots going on at the same time. Not sordid in the Nancy Grace sense, or the SVU sense. Just involving levels of manipulation and equivocation that most of us would not see ourselves falling prey to. - The adult woman, guest of honor at her own baby shower, left the roomful of guests and her daughter immediately began to spill the beans about what the adult woman had said, previously, about each of the guests. By the time...

If his 9-for-9 night at the free throw line or his third-quarter dunk were any indication, senior Drew Cole found his Friday night a lot easier when there wasn't a defender between him and the basket. The third quarter was the same indication for the Wildcats, who ran an efficient transition attack to a 28-point period that paved the way for an 82-68 victory over Hope Christian at Rock Staubus Gymnasium. • Grant McGee: When eyes roll

"You and I are going to take out the hearth in front of the fireplace," said The Lady of the House. She loves home improvement projects. I rolled my eyes. "It's all good," she said. "Shouldn't take us more than an hour." Those were fateful words. "I'm sure it's just a plywood box covered in fake rock," she said, referring to the soon-to-be-dismantled hearth. We started chipping at the 30-year-old fake rock, it fell away like magic. We began to do a little fake rock dance as we carried away piles of the ancient material,...
