Arnoldo Navarette, 44, was sentenced to life in prison in September 2010 for the 1993 shooting death of Portales resident Reynaldo Ornelas, Sr. The New Mexico Supreme Court overturned Navarette’s conviction in January 2013, saying Navarette’s rights were violated because he wasn’t allowed to confront the state pathologist who conducted the autopsy used as evidence, according to court documents. Staff report Portales police are warning about a scam that has hit two hotels in the area. The scam goes like this: Someone calls, pretending to be a representative of the city water department. The caller says an outstanding bill is due and if it is not paid immediately, the water will be shut off.
