  • Letter to editor: Volunteers sought for Fort Sumner Army Air Field Museum

Volunteers sought for Fort Sumner Army Air Field Museum An exploratory committee is needed for Fort Sumner Army Air Field Museum. That was the consensus among the 30 people who attended my presentation on that air field's history, my on-going research, and my vision of a World War II museum to commemorate Fort Sumner Army Air Field (FSAAF). Following the presentation, many persons had questions and comments. Dan Craig, manager of the Valero Fast Stop No. 20, stated that he wanted to be a member of the exploratory committee... Full story

  • Less regulation equals better government

New Mexico's been a state for more than 100 years. One might think we'd be organized by now, that the annual lawmaking get-togethers in Santa Fe would only be needed for tweaking or maybe addressing issues created by new technology. But as of last week, legislators in 2013 had introduced 557 bills intended to change the way government does things. Five-hundred-fifty-seven. That includes more than two dozen just from local representatives. And deadline for filing is still two weeks away! We haven't read all the new proposals,...

  • Report disputes cost of reservists

    Tom Philpott Military Update

This time last year the Air Force unveiled a plan to cut Air National Guard strength by 5,100 members along with more than 200 Guard aircraft. They touted this as a reasonable efficiency, in part because Guard squadrons cost more to operate than active duty squadrons. That argument was dead wrong, says Maj. Gen. Arnold L. Punaro, a retired Marine Corps reservist and chairman of the Reserve Forces Policy Board. In a new report, the advisory board he leads urges the Department of Defense to stop ignoring the true and... Full story

  • My Turn - Don't run me over while I'm biking

I received some pretty awesome gifts for Christmas, but one I'm particularly excited about is my new bike. Cycling is similar to running for me. Once you start going, you've never felt so free. Just to keep going as if no one can stop you feels so liberating. I know this isn't the most bicycle-friendly town, but there's just so much open space you can't help but want to go for miles. And I've been waiting for the freezing days to hurry up and go because you only get about two good riding days a year with this aggressive wind.... Full story

  • Proportional system would break electoral college

    Kevin Wilson

We were sure for an election spectacle both Romney and Obama backers were certain their polls and math, and only their polls and math, were right. Somebody had to be wrong, and it was Karl Rove and Donald Trump and their "unskewed" polls logic. Aghast at Barack Obama's re-election, Trump wondered how it could be because the current popular vote count said Romney was ahead. "He lost the popular vote by a lot and won the election," Trump tweeted. "We should have a revolution in this country!" It didn't gain much traction for...

    Christina Calloway PNT senior writer

There will be a new family business on Main Avenue in February. The Mountjoys, a military family, aren't new to Portales but their popular sandwich and coffee shop will be relocating to the downtown area. The mother and son team who own the Do Drop In saw an opportunity to move to the square when they got word that Bread Basket owner Lori Bollema was closing her business. The Bread Basket property is owned by J.P. Stone Bank. The restaurant was formerly known as the bank's Pioneer Room. Owner Kamille Mountjoy said they have...

  • NM renewing fight over immigrant licenses

    Barry Massey The Associated Press

SANTA FE — As other states move to provide driver's licenses to immigrants unlawfully in the country, New Mexico has renewed a battle over a proposal by Republican Gov. Susana Martinez to stop granting licenses to illegal immigrants. A House committee on Tuesday shelved the governor's proposal but the issue isn't likely to go away in the Legislature. The Labor and Human Resources Committee voted 5-4 along party lines to keep the measure bottled up in the panel — a possible way for majority Democrats to try to delay act...

  • US eyes Africa drone base

    ROBERT BURNS The Associated Press

WASHINGTON — Plans to base unarmed American surveillance drones in the African nation of Niger highlight the Obama administration's growing concern about extremist influences in the volatile region. They also raise tough questions about how to contain al-Qaida and other militant groups without committing U.S. ground forces in yet another war. In the short run, a drone base would enable the U.S. to give France more intelligence on the militants that French troops are fighting in neighboring Mali. Over time it could extend t... Full story

    CMI staff

TUCUMCARI — It took the Portales Rams a while to get going Tuesday night. They found their stroke in the second half, shooting 53 percent from the field en route to a 65-59 win over Tucumcari. Senior post Zach Campbell scored two consecutive baskets to break a 54-54 tie down the stretch, and junior forward Daniel Sanchez went 4-for-4 from the free throw line in the final 15 seconds to extend a two-point lead. Portales (11-7) finished the game 14-of-16 from the foul line while the Rattlers (10-7) went just 8-of-15. "The k...
