The Staff of The News|Updated Jan 27, 2017

Curry County Clerk Jo Lynn Queener died Thursday night in a Lubbock hospital, with family at her side, County Manager Lance Pyle said. Queener had been transported to Lubbock via ambulance early Tuesday afternoon. Family members said she suffered a ruptured brain aneurysm. She was 48. “(She) was a beloved member of our community, a great asset to Curry County and will be sorely missed,” Pyle said. “I ask the residents of Curry County to keep her family and her county family in your thoughts and prayers.” Queener in June de... Full story

  • Gutierrez found guilty in shooting case

    Kevin Wilson|Updated Jan 27, 2017

CLOVIS — A Curry County jury needed two hours Thursday to return a guilty verdict on a 2002 shooting case. David Gutierrez, 35, was convicted of first-degree murder in the death of Jose Valverde, and immediately following the trial received a life sentence (30 years before the possibility of parole) with a one-year enhancement for use of a firearm. The trial, which included three days of testimony, weighed largely on whether the jury would convict based almost entirely on t...

  • Hounds upset No. 20 West Texas A&M

    David Norton|Updated Jan 27, 2017

PORTALES - While it is just one win,it was a big one for Eastern New Mexico's men. A 96-83 victory over No. 20 West Texas A&M Thursday night might be just the game the Eastern New Mexico men's basketball team needed to turn its season around, as it is the first over a nationally-ranked opponent in at least a decade. Even more impressive? The Greyhounds, ninth in the Lone Star Conference at 2-8 (8-12 overall), pulled the upset without leading scorers CoRnell Neal and Marquis...

  • Follow the Lamb in this heated political season

    Judy Brandon|Updated Jan 27, 2017

I am certainly no presidential historian or even a history expert for that matter. You may not be either. However, I cannot remember such venom in a presidential campaign and election as we have seen in this last one. Even families have experienced this frustration. After Thanksgiving, I heard about a family that was going to get together on the Thanksgiving holiday but the rule was: No talking politics. Everyone was so tense and knew that if either candidate was mentioned,...

  • Wishing nominees could tell it like it is

    John Stossel|Updated Jan 27, 2017

Donald Trump’s nominee for secretary of education, Betsy DeVos, probably survived the grilling she got from angry Democrats last week. When Sen. Patty Murray demanded she promise not “to privatize public schools,” DeVos replied, “Not all schools are working for the students.” When Sen. Bernie Sanders asked her to make “universities tuition free,” DeVos replied, “I think that’s a really interesting idea (but) there’s nothing in life that’s truly free.” Those answers were fine. I suppose it’s important for a nominee t...

  • Trump's inaugural speech had polish of pro writer

    Steve Hansen|Updated Jan 27, 2017

President Trump’s inaugural address has been received alternately with adulation and shock and dismay from the predictable sources. The question remains, however, who wrote it? Having done limited work as a speech writer, I can tell you that Trump’s inaugural address had the earmarks of a professionally written speech. Consider this excerpt: “Their victories have not been your victories. Their triumphs have not been your triumphs. And while they celebrated in our nation’s capital, there was little to celebrate for struggl...

  • Jesus' sacrifice removes heaviest chains

    Curtis Shelburne|Updated Jan 27, 2017

“Wow. This box is heavy,” asserted my wife as she lugged in a box dropped on our porch by UPS. Immediately, I knew what it was, and that she was right. You see, a box of chains (not of the jewelry variety) is usually heavy. Our annual family ski trip is right on the horizon. Before our four sons left the nest, a ski trip every year or two was often a significant financial undertaking for our family, but, as my wife and I had hoped, it was great time together and an inv...

  • The art of punching cows: Part 3

    Audra Brown|Updated Jan 27, 2017

Not all cow-punchers favor a direct and safer method of maneuvering bovines. For those who are ready to trade a little predictability and comfort for the wiles of a flexible weapon, then exploration of The Way of the Popping Wrist is probably a good choice. Known for its pains as often as its victories, it is not a path to glory, but it is a way that rarely gets boring or ever runs out of room to be improved. It is the most versatile and involves the mastery of flexible...

Shooting doomed the Greyhounds (14-4, 10-1) as their l...
