The Rams notched 167 points to 113 for Texas A&M-Kingsville, which got the other first-place vote and edged out Tarleton State (112) and Incarnate Word (110) f...

  • Rams fall to Moriarty; Lady Rams cruise

    Kevin Wilson CMI staff writer

The Portales Rams are still learning there aren't mulligans on the basketball court, while Moriarty started tough and finished tougher. Luke Thomas scored 17 points, including the go-ahead 3-pointer and a pair of layups in the fourth quarter, and the 4A Pintos held off hard-charging Portales to notch a 56-51 victory Saturday at the Ram Athletic Center. The girls game in the nightcap wasn't nearly as close, with Portales never threatened in a 45-13 victory over the Lady Pintos. Moriarty coach Michael Mondragon, a former guard...

  • I'll take my ice in a tea glass

As far as I'm concerned, there are only two times when ice is a good thing. When it's hot and you're making tea and when you need to get up a muddy road. That second instance came into play on a recent hunting trip I talked about. Driving and walking over a muddy road in the pre-dawn with temperatures well below freezing was a lot easier than coming out in the afternoon when the mercury had climbed into the 50s. I've sat and slept on frozen ground over the years and spent some of the most uncomfortable slowly thawing a piece...

  • Good roper relishes the opportunity to rope a big target

Todd's neighbor has raised good Hereford cattle as long as he has known him. As years went by Mr. Gerald, the neighbor, let his herd dwindle in numbers. Then last winter he fell and injured his knee. Todd offered to help and was called upon. Just a word about Todd, he is an east river Dakota cattle farmer with the heart of a west river rancher. He's a good horseman, wears a big hat and carries a 60' rope! Mr. Gerald wanted to ship some of his long yearlin's. His whole herd consisted of 12 big cows, one old bull and assorted... Full story

  • Local representatives concerned with keeping programs

    Steve Hansen CMI staff writer

The fiscal cliff that had threatened the nation with possible recession became a speed bump at the last minute on New Year's Day, but the law that averted the cliff consisted mostly of date changes. Many of the same issues still confront Washington leaders and the public's collective bank accounts. In the wake of the cliff, the Congress members who represent Curry, Roosevelt and Quay counties, all Democrats, are mainly concerned with keeping alive the federal programs that benefit New Mexico, especially the Los Alamos and...

  • Private funded PRC invites more problems

The League of Women Voters of New Mexico is proposing the state Public Regulation Commission get its funding off the industries it regulates. There may be precedent, but this is a bad idea given the PRC's history of conflicts of interest and propensity for shenanigans. The PRC is entrusted with striking a balance between utility customers and industries, ensuring consumers pay fair and reasonable rates for reasonable and adequate services, while companies receive a fair rate of return. League committee member Neva Van Peski...

  • Victim advocates play vital role

    Marissa Evans Guest columnist

Victim advocates often respond with law enforcement and medical providers to violent crime. As a first responder, a victim advocate's role is to tend to any and all emotional needs of the victim and provide any crisis intervention needed. Often, the presence of a victim advocate can soften a victim's hesitation to cooperate. As sexual assault victim advocates, we often help the victim understand the importance of a sexual assault exam and help them to come to a decision of whether or not they wish to have a sexual assault...
