  • Secrecy of job applicants not a good practice

    Albuquerque Journal|Updated Jan 25, 2017

It’s a brand new year, with a brand new 60-day state legislative session. Yet as some talk about trying to move the state forward, one powerful New Mexico lawmaker would take it back, quite literally, to the dark ages of government accountability and transparency. It is shocking that Senate President Pro Tem Mary Kay Papen, D-Las Cruces, thinks it’s a good idea to allow public agencies in New Mexico to keep the results of their applicant searches secret until they are down to one (or a few) finalist(s) for a top job at a pub...

On inauguration day, MSNBC put together a panel led by Rachel Maddow that included Chris Matthews, Brian Williams and Steve Schmidt to provide live coverage of the occasion. The network would have been hard pressed to come up with a more mediocre group of has-been losers. Williams lost his NBC anchor spot on the “Nightly News” for exaggerating the details of his military travels during the Iraq War. He was suspended without pay for six months and is now working on MSNBC. The...

    Kent McManigal|Updated Jan 25, 2017

Another election, another president. Some people are optimistic; others are wringing their hands in apparent horror. As with every president, I’m a disinterested observer. Presidents and other such political creatures haven’t mattered much to me since I was in my 20s and began to grow out of my desire for a leash. There has never been a president who had much impact on my life, unless I foolishly paid more attention to him than was warranted. The longer I live, the less fre...
