    Peter Stein|Updated Jan 25, 2018

GRADY - Jared Piepkorn has always been ready for anything, so why not coaching high school baseball? He's moved around with his military father, played on a Norwegian national baseball team as a result of that life in transit. After eventually playing for Clovis High and graduating from there in 1995, he was a scholarship rodeo rider at Eastern New Mexico University, turned pro while at Eastern, then became a two-time MRCA world champion bull rider. He's been a USSSA baseball...

  • Santa Fe stuns Clovis

    Peter Stein|Updated Jan 25, 2018

CLOVIS — Santa Fe High’s boys basketball team is nicknamed the Demons. Fitting, because Tuesday night against Clovis, they played like a team possessed. Santa Fe erased an early 8-0 deficit, then escaped a 17-point hole in the third quarter. And as the game’s final four-tenths of a second ticked away, the Demons seized a 60-58 win over the Wildcats on Victor Salcido’s right-elbow buzzer-beating three that stunned the Rock Staubus Gymnasium crowd. “We challenged them at halfti...

  • Muleshoe tabs Portales native Walker as new football coach

    Kevin Wilson|Updated Jan 24, 2018

MULESHOE — After more than 20 years, the Muleshoe Mules will have a new head football coach. But Lee Walker inherits a much different program than predecessor David Wood. The longtime defensive coordinator for Plainview High School was hired Monday to become the new coach and transition into the athletic director role. In both roles Walker will replace David Wood, who announced his retirement in November. Wood, who went 184-79, took over a lowly Mule program in 1996 that w...

  • Clovis girls start fast, cruise by Santa Fe

The Staff of The News|Updated Jan 24, 2018

SANTA FE — A look at the overall records would indicate that even as the road team, the Clovis Wildcats were a slight favorite over the Santa Fe Demons. But games aren't played on paper, and Clovis didn't take any advantage for granted in a 49-31 victory for their second District 2-6A win Tuesday night. Teya Morris scored 18 points, including a 10-for-10 effort from the line, and Mikyla Harkley added 11 in a game that belonged to Clovis (11-8, 2-1) from the tip. "We had a g...

  • Portales dominates second half to top Ruidoso

The Staff of The News|Updated Jan 24, 2018

RUIDOSO — Portales High coach Wade Fraze called Tuesday night's game between his Rams and the Ruidoso Warriors a "Tale of two halves." Indeed it was, as Portales outscored Ruidoso by 37 points in the second half, en route to a 68-23 victory. Portales (19-2, 2-0) was outscored in the second quarter, but carried a 31-21 lead into intermission. Amazingly, Ruidoso (6-14, 0-1) was held to just two points in the third quarter, and were completely shut out in the fourth quarter. "We...

Portales (10-8, 1-1) overcame a nine-point fourth quarter deficit to take the win. "In the first half, we really struggled," Rams coach Rickie McBroom explained. "In the second half, we played with a lot more intensity. We were down nine in the fourth, and we started man pressing. We rebounded really well and hit so...

  • Valuing collective above all unsustainable

    Kent McManigal|Updated Jan 24, 2018

Like most people, I enjoy fiction; books, movies, and television programs. Fiction can be entertaining, educational, and inspiring as long as you don’t confuse it with reality. As a child I loved re-runs of “Gilligan’s Island” and dreamed of being marooned on a deserted tropical island. The older I became, the less realistic their situation seemed. The lack of variety in their diet, the constant parade of accidental transient visitors who never sent back help, the clothin...

  • Reporter's notebook: Fireworks for the birds

    Eamon Scarbrough|Updated Jan 24, 2018

PORTALES — If your idyllic stroll through the Eastern New Mexico University campus tonight is interrupted by a series of loud popping sounds, you have nothing to fear — unless you’re a bird. The university’s physical plant will be performing a series of “bird scares” with fireworks, a tactic ENMU Vice President of Business Affairs Scott Smart said discourages birds from congregating around buildings. “They usually collect around the College of Business. There’s a row of trees along the edge of that building — I think they...

  • Area unemployment rate lower than state average

    Eamon Scarbrough|Updated Jan 23, 2018

New Mexico’s 6 percent unemployment rate — the second highest in the nation — isn’t sending eastern New Mexico into a panic. Though unemployment in the state has dropped from 6.1 percent in November of 2017, the unemployment rate in December was only lower than Alaska, at 7.3 percent. Eastern New Mexico’s positive attitude has to do with keeping the situation in perspective, according to Roosevelt County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Karl Terry. Roosevelt County’s unemployment rate was 4.8 percent in November of...

  • CYFD has to do better job caring for its charges

    Albuquerque Journal|Updated Jan 23, 2018

In large bureaucracies, things can slip through the cracks. But that absolutely cannot include 11-month-old babies. And yet it does. It is once again glaringly apparent that in New Mexico some children do not fare well within a system that is supposed to protect them. The most recent tiny victim is Ariza Barreras. She and two siblings, ages 3 and 2, were in foster care with the state’s Children Youth and Families Department. On Dec. 28, the children were placed in the Belen home of a respite licensed foster caregiver b...
