Recent numbers on impaired driving provided by Clovis police indicate a plateau or slight drop in DWI arrests, but a rise in alcohol-related crashes. Records show two DWI arrests for the last three days of the years 2016 and 2017, but an increase from two to three arrests in the first five days in the corresponding new year. From a larger perspective, total DWI arrests in the years 2015, 2016 and 2017 were 97, 98 and 93, respectively. Those numbers are somewhat promising for the slight drop overall in DWI, but what’s more d...
PORTALES — One week ago, the young Lovington Wildcats girls basketball team kept the Portales Rams on the ropes, trailing by just five points at half, before Portales ultimately pulled away. On Friday night, however, Portales would have no part of any kind of close game, forcing the issue from start to finish in a 62-19 rout. "That was what we wanted to do is get out to a good start, because last week we didn't," Rams coach Wade Fraze explained. "We just wanted to get off t...
RIO RANCHO — If Clovis' girls basketball team could bottle up the last three quarters of Friday night's road game against Cleveland, the Lady Wildcats would have been in great shape. Unfortunately for them, though, all four quarters count. Clovis fell into a big hole early and could never quite recover, ultimately losing 69-61 at Cleveland. The Lady 'Cats (9-7) trailed 20-8 after one quarter, but lost the game by eight. You don't need a math degree from M.I.T., or even a c...
CLOVIS — The Clovis Wildcats boys and girls swim teams will get a preview of what's to come at the state championship meet when they travel to Albuquerque today for the Academy Invitational. "(Saturday) is sort of a mid-season meet and we're just looking to improve," Clovis coach Vincent de Maio said. "We have a couple state-qualifying times that we still need to get, we have a couple of kids that still need a couple, so we're looking to pick those up and then just work on t...
ELIDA — For Elida freshman Alyssa Bargas, one was as good as two Friday night. At least position-wise. Bargas, who usually starts at the two (shooting) guard spot, stepped up at the one (point) guard in place of the injured Lacey Ferguson and scored 15 points, adding a nice inside-out complement to senior forward Kasyn Creighton's game-high 16, as the Lady Tigers coasted past Floyd 54-26 on Friday at Elida High School. By combining for 31, the Elida duo outscored Floyd by five...
SANTA FE — For the second night in a row, the Portales boys basketball team had to rally from a second-half deficit to force overtime in the St. Mike's Shootout. Unlike Thursday night, however, the Rams weren't so lucky on Friday night, falling to the host St. Mike's Horsemen, 67-65. Portales (9-6) fell behind by 20 points, 40-20, at the half. However, a strong third quarter showing helped the Rams get right back in it, as Portales outscored St. Mike's (6-10) 28-9 to close t...
MELROSE — A sudden decision by the state's Aging and Long-Term Services Department affecting the reimbursement of senior care providers drew concern this month from area politicians and local senior center leadership, in spite of assurances there will be no interruption to service. ALTSD decided last month "to terminate its contract with the Non-Metro Area Agency on Aging (NMAAA) amid serious concerns about fiscal management and accounting for state and federal funds for s...
Recent weather conditions have made eastern New Mexico and the rest of the region and state a prime breeding ground for wildfires. "Unless something changes before March, we're looking at a prolonged wildfire period throughout much of the state really," National Weather Service Meteorologist Clay Anderson said on Friday. Anderson said a pair of cold fronts coming in will limit the chances for wildfires over the next several days, but the NWS is expecting dry and windy...

CLOVIS — Police on Friday filed charges and citations for a 16-year old without a driver's license and her 19-year old passenger involved in a hit-and-run incident Wednesday that put a woman in the hospital. Shelly Fris, 57, was in stable condition at a Lubbock hospital Friday after a maroon SUV struck her from behind while she was checking her mail around 11 a.m. two days earlier near the intersection of 12th and Prince streets. Fris told police she was “pinned under the vehicle and that the vehicle then backed up,” accor...
FARWELL — Jackson Jarman, Lee Roy Cervantes and Brandon Galvan combined to score 61 points, 78 percent of Farwell’s total, as the Steers rallied from a big early hole to wallop Sudan 78-51 in Friday’s district opener for both teams. Farwell fell behind 10-0 to start the game, but battled back enough in the first quarter to trail only 12-9 by the end of it. The Steers then rolled up 57 total points across the second and third quarters — 26 in the former, 31 in the latter — while allowing just 23 during that span, and were...

CLOVIS — What first appeared to be a structure fire at a Clovis residence Thursday night was only a “makeshift fireplace” for two cold residents at an outbuilding, Fire Chief Mike Nolen said. Firefighters responded around 8:30 p.m. to a report of smoke at a building at the intersection of Fifth and Wallace streets, but “when they arrived they found two individuals with a makeshift fireplace trying to stay warm,” he said Friday. The individuals put out the fire after officials told them it was “noncompliant,” Nolen said....
