  • Wolverines top Foxes in EPAC boys finale

    David Norton|Updated Jan 11, 2017

PORTALES — Another Eastern Plains Athletic Conference tournament in the books, another win for the Texico Wolverines. The Wolverines used a dominating second quarter to beat the Foxes on Saturday night at Greyhound Arena and win their second consecutive EPAC boys title. Texico (11-4) built a 16-point halftime lead by outscoring the Foxes 17-3 in the second period, and it was just too much for Fort Sumner (9-3) to overcome. "We got open looks early, but they weren't falling a...

  • More to chickens than meets the eye

    Sharna Johnson|Updated Jan 11, 2017

It’s no surprise they aren’t given much credit. They bobble around scratching and pecking at the ground in what appears a mindless exploration of … dirt. Two-legged, feathered, beak-faced and egg laying, while everyone understands it’s a bird, the chicken — plump and awkward next to others of its species — is relegated to the fringes of birddom in popular perception. Shaped like warped bowling pins that don’t sail through the air with style and beauty, chickens just don’t fi...

  • Eagles ride big quarter past Cats

The Staff of The News|Updated Jan 11, 2017

HOBBS — For one quarter on Saturday night, Clovis High’s boys gave longtime rival Hobbs a pretty good battle. Actually, the Wildcats played pretty well in three of the four periods. It was the second stanza, though, which got them in an 81-51 loss to the Eagles on Saturday night. Hobbs (9-4) outscored the Cats 26-10 in that period to extend to a 19-point halftime lead, simply too much for Clovis to make up. “We played three (decent) quarters,” CHS coach Scott Robinson said. “We’ve still got to put four quarters together.” Jun...

  • Applaud artists for their art - not their politics

    David Stevens|Updated Jan 11, 2017

This freedom of speech thing can get your blood to boiling, no matter your political stripe. If that's happened to you lately, I think you should chill. Sticks and stones, Dude. This is a hot topic today because, on Sunday night, Actress Meryl Streep criticized our soon-to-be president. She said, "Disrespect invites disrespect. Violence incites violence. When the powerful use their position to bully others, we all lose." Donald Trump fired back on Twitter, calling Streep,...
