  • Final motions heard ahead of daycare trial

    David Grieder|Updated Jan 8, 2019

PORTALES - Almost 18 months since their arrest following the death of a young child in their care, Mary and Sandi Taylor appeared in court with their attorney on Monday. The purpose was for final motion hearings in advance of their joint trial starting by month's end. The mother-daughter duo and former daycare operators were each charged with two first-degree child abuse felonies after leaving two young girls in a car for more than an hour the afternoon of July 25, 2017, in...

  • EPAC offers tune-up

    Peter Stein, Staff writer|Updated Jan 8, 2019

TEXICO - When taking a long drive, it's always good to see certain mileposts, certain landmarks, signifying how far you've come no matter how far you still need to go. The EPAC tournament is a metaphoric milepost, an in-season landmark. It's not any team's final destination - they all want to win a state championship in March, and early January is just too relatively early in the season whether they're state-champion material or not. EPAC, though, is an important point in the...

  • Another viewpoint: State could use new economic model

    The Taos News|Updated Jan 8, 2019

Congratulations, Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, on the beginning of your journey leading the state. You certainly have the political chops and smarts for the job. We agree with so much of what you talked about in your inaugural speech Jan. 1 as you took the helm of a troubled state. We applaud your plan to raise the minimum wage and ensure early childhood education for every New Mexican preschooler. Certainly your focus on increasing renewable energy and protecting the environment are vital goals. We also think you made good...

  • Good or bad, change is coming

    Tom McDonald|Updated Jan 8, 2019

Suit up, New Mexicans. Big changes are about to take place. That’s what a commanding majority of New Mexicans voted for — but that doesn’t mean we’re all going to like it. Take gun control as an example. In a rural western state such as ours, there are plenty of people who don’t want additional gun controls, but you can bet there will be talk of doing exactly that. It’ll pit urban lawmakers along the Rio Grande Corridor against lawmakers from small towns and country settings around the state. Even some Democratic lawmakers w...

  • US needs to act, not pontificate, on immigration

    Albuquerque Journal|Updated Jan 8, 2019

As the stalemate and partial government shutdown over $5 billion for a border wall/fence/barrier grinds on, the tragedies associated with illegal immigration continue to mount. Unfortunately, both sides are focused on photo ops and talking points for political leverage rather than dealing with the facts. That’s unfortunate, because in addition to the human tragedy there is the question of whether the United States can defend its borders — even in cases that tear at the heartstrings. Members of the Congressional Hispanic Cau...

  • Let others make their mistakes

    Kent McManigal|Updated Jan 8, 2019

One of the hardest things you’ll ever have to do is let people make their own mistakes. Whether you’re seeing your child about to make a mistake, or seeing other people making pointless and unnecessary mistakes, it’s hard to watch without stepping in. It’s even harder when you know those mistakes will hurt you or other innocent people who had no part in making the mistake. In such cases, warning people they are making a mistake is self-defense. Most people will ignore your wa...

His first game with the team will be Feb. 24 against the Iowa Barnstormers. Cass said he wasn’t particularly looking at arena football teams, and doesn’t know too much about the sport, the Blizzard or even Wiscons...

  • Portales holds off Santa Rosa

    Updated Jan 8, 2019

SANTA ROSA — From a look at the box score, Portales Saturday win at Santa Rosa looked a lot like its Friday win over Robertson — big third-quarter, following by surviving the opposition’s big fourth quarter. But, coach Rickie McBroom said, that wasn’t the case as the Rams claimed a 56-53 victory. They bring a three-game winning streak into this week, which opened Tuesday night at Texico and includes three games in the Portales Shootout Thursday through Saturday. Kellan Hightower score 19 points, including a pair of free th...

  • Republican party to keep chair

The Staff of The News|Updated Jan 8, 2019

CLOVIS — The Curry County Republican Party kept R.L. “Rube” Render as party chairman at its biennial organizational convention, held Saturday at the Ingram Room of the Clovis-Carver Public Library. Render said in October he was likely going to step down as chairman, citing time commitments as a Clovis city commissioner and a desire to bring fresh blood into leadership after 16 years in the position. The most recent general election, which saw Democrats capture the majority of statewide offices, gave Render and others secon...

  • Clovis man gets probation

The Staff of The News|Updated Jan 8, 2019

CLOVIS — A Clovis man was sentenced Tuesday to two years supervised probation through a plea agreement on a domestic violence case from late 2017. Mark Cordova, 19, pleaded guilty to misdemeanor battery in an agreement by which prosecutors dismissed a felony false imprisonment charge emerging from the Nov. 28, 2017, incident. The agreement was signed last month and finalized this week in the court of Judge Matthew Chandler. District Attorney Andrea Reeb said the victim was not communicating with prosecutors when the offer w...

  • Broadview fire department upgraded

The Staff of The News|Updated Jan 8, 2019

The Broadview Fire Department has been notified of an upgrade in its rating from the Insurance Service Office from Class 9 to Class 8B. The upgrade could qualify landowners within the Broadview Fire Protection District for lower insurance premiums. It also increases the department’s State Fire Fund allotment by at least $7,800 annually, with the money available for anything from utility payments to training to vehicle purchases. County Fire and Safety Director David Kube said he’s been working with the department since he...

  • Dairy owner speaks in Portales

    Jamie Cushman|Updated Jan 8, 2019

PORTALES - A local dairy owner's tour of government entities to discuss the water contamination issue near Cannon Air Force Base continued at Tuesday's Roosevelt County Commission meeting. Art Schaap, who previously addressed the Clovis City Commission and Curry County Commission, shared much of the same details with Roosevelt County commissioners on Tuesday, calling on them to put pressure on the state's environmental department to hold Cannon accountable for the water...

  • Reporter's notebook: Virtual animals, real business

    Updated Jan 8, 2019

There are more animals at the city zoo than meet the naked eye, if you count the electronic cast of cartoon creatures drawing players at a steady pace the past few weeks. Staff at the Hillcrest Park Zoo have seen a recent jump in individual visits and annual pass sales from patrons “looking at virtual animals instead of real ones,” Hillcrest Park Zoo staff told The News of the resurgence in past weeks of the altered-reality mobile gaming application Pokémon GO. “There are quite a few Pokémon people. They do come in, and a l...

  • Heads together

    Jamie Cushman|Updated Jan 8, 2019

CLOVIS - If Monday's legislative luncheon roundtable at the Clovis/Curry County Chamber of Commerce is any indication, marijuana will be on legislators' minds when they travel to Santa Fe later this month for the 60-day session. The legalization of recreational marijuana was one of many issues covered as part of the wide-ranging discussion that featured over 50 current and former area city, county, state, education and business leaders. Participants included Rep. Randy...

  • Shooting trial date delayed again

    Kevin Wilson|Updated Jan 8, 2019

CLOVIS — Uncertainty about an expert witness led to a second continuance Monday for a man accused of a fatal shooting 16 months ago. Darryl Turner, 31, is now scheduled to be tried Feb. 25-March 1 for second-degree murder in the Sept. 5, 2017, death of David McDonald after District Judge Matt Chandler allowed the continuance. The trial was initially set to begin Monday with jury selection. Turner, indicted in May on the charge, was first scheduled for trial last September, but the trial was continued due to additional d...

  • PetStories - It takes all kinds: Razzy

    Updated Jan 8, 2019

Razzy has been in our lives for four years now. His story is very unique in many ways. I responded to an ad for a 6-month-old male Yorkie. For some reason I felt the need to reply, though we had never had a house dog. Boy were we in for a treat. A family that lived in military housing had purchased Razzy for a Christmas gift for their kids. After the new wore off they no longer wanted or loved this poor little guy. Razzy is now the king of our household. My husband tells me...

  • PetStories - It takes all kinds: Laila Joy

    Updated Jan 8, 2019

When my husband and I got married, he worked with a man doing construction. The man was also an animal rescuer and found this dog in an abandoned house in Clovis. My husband and I took her in. All we knew about her at the time was that she was about 10-12 weeks old, was a boxer mix (hence her name) and had likely been abused and neglected. She was found with several other dogs. We have been her forever home since April of 2009. She has eaten countless cords, remotes and four...

  • CASA volunteer can be a child's best friend

    Betty Williamson|Updated Jan 8, 2019

When a small child has the misfortune of somehow entering the legal system — usually through no fault of their own — sometimes the best friend that child can have is a Court Appointed Special Advocate or CASA volunteer. Unfortunately, that’s a service that has been missing in eastern New Mexico for almost a year, according to Erinn Burch, executive director of the United Way of Eastern New Mexico. She said it was lost when the 9th Judicial District’s Family and Childre...

  • Sandals with socks? I don't judge

    Carrie Classon|Updated Jan 8, 2019

I’ll tell you what no one wants to talk about: their toes. I could get people to discuss intimate details of their financial or their love lives before they would open up about their feet. Oh, sure, there are exceptions. “I just had my first pedicure of the season!” says a friend of mine, showing off her toes with a stylish French manicure in a pair of bright red sandals. I am also wearing sandals and make sure my feet are hidden under my chair as I compliment her lovely toes. (Lovely toes! I think. Who has lovely toes over...
