  • Christmas a season, not just a day

    Curtis Shelburne

Religion columnist link Curtis Shelburne “The Season of Hope.” Those are the words emblazoned across the gift bag I just puttered past in our bedroom. And so it is, this great season of Christmas. A season when hope takes center stage. And, sorry if this is picky, I really do think the season is a good deal more hope-full when we realize that it’s a season, not just a day that ends on the last gasp of Dec. 25 and vanishes once the wrapping paper hits the floor. It’s a season...

  • Gov. Susana Martinez takes second oath of office

New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez struck a bipartisan tone and promised to push for education reform as she took the oath of office for a second time Thursday. The Associated Press reported Martinez, the nation’s only Latina governor and rising star within the Republican Party, told an audience at a ceremony inside the House chamber that the election was over, and it was time for both parties to put aside differences to find solutions to help transform one of the poorest states in the country. Here are excerpts from her s... Full story

  • Sliding is fun, but sometimes a little smelly

Local columnist link Audra Brown The snow falls, the water freezes, and there’s lots of ice to break. But the cold can bring more than just work and in between water tanks, it’s easy to run into a good time. Truth is, ground covered in snow (or mostly covered, it doesn’t take as much as you might think) is considerably more fun than ground not covered in snow. Especially if you happen to have a semi-slick piece of something (such as an old pickup bedliner), a rope, some fello...

  • Some raise bar high on new year resolutions

Derek Major Staff writer [email protected] A new year can bring resolution, relief or hope. Ashley Cohen, 27, of Portales, is heading into 2015 full of optimism. “I plan on meeting my husband by the end of the year,” she said. “I just think that this is going to be the year for me. “Usually I don’t try to date or meet people, but I’ve been alone for a while so I plan on being proactive this year.” Not everyone is heading into 2015 with such lofty goals or expectations. Some are aiming for contentment. “I don’t really ma...

  • Death penalty can't fall short of standards

Those people and institutions opposed to the death penalty — this newspaper, for one — might ordinarily be encouraged by the year-end report on executions in Texas. After all, the number of people put to death by the state is the lowest in 18 years. Ten people died in Huntsville’s death chamber last year, one-fourth the annual record of 40 executions, set in 2000. For a change, Texas in 2014 was not the nation’s far-and-away death penalty leader, having tied with Missouri for the top spot. A closer look at some of the peo... Full story

  • McManigal: Control is in government's nature

“If men are good, you don’t need government; if men are evil or ambivalent, you don’t dare have one.” — Robert LeFevre, libertarian businessman One common argument for government is that people are evil, greedy, and cruel, so government is necessary to protect people from each other. Kent McManigal This seems to ignore the fact government is made up of those same people. How giving some of those evil, greedy, and cruel people authority over the rest is supposed to solve the problem has always mystified me, and asking how this... Full story

  • Render: Censorship amnesia spreading

At a Dec. 19 press conference, President Obama made the following comments about Sony Corporation’s decision to cancel the release of the movie “The Interview:” “We cannot have a society in which some dictator someplace can start imposing censorship here in the United States,” Obama said. “Because if somebody is able to intimidate folks out of releasing a satirical movie, imagine what they will start doing when they see a documentary they don’t like or news reports they...

  • My resolution to start 'rememberlutions' jar

Religion columnist link Patti Dobson I don’t do New Year’s resolutions. More often than not, they are broken before the ink is dry on the paper, resulting in a double whammy of failure and guilt. Truth be told, this new year is harder to face than others. I’m still reeling from the unexpected loss of someone who colored my life with humor, love and joy. Lona Waldo, a sprite of a woman, died the beginning of December. And I’m struggling to wrap my head, and heart, around... Full story

  • Familiar ring: Roads, water top priority lists

    Kevin Wilson

STAFF WRITER [email protected] When resolving for a better 2015, Clovis city officials look at repeating some of 2014’s priorities — better roads and proactive water supply management. But there are a few other tasks on the board for the upcoming 12 months, too. “I think our first priority is getting a good city manager,” District 2 Commissioner Gary Elliott said, referring to Joe Thomas’ planned retirement in 2015. “We really need to look long and hard there. “Water is such a big deal. We need to stay on top of that s...
