  • Opinion: 'Debate' couldn't have been over too soon

    Rich Manieri, Syndicated columnist|Updated Oct 3, 2020

That’s over, and not a second too soon. Who won? Who cares? If you can find a winner somewhere in that mess, “Ah Salud!” as the Italians say. There was Trump, festooned in his presidential uniform, hair helmet included, and Biden, looking like a cross between my Welsh Corgi and a ghost in Disneyworld’s Haunted Mansion. I confess, I tuned into the first presidential debate for two reasons — one of which was merely macabre curiosity, the other a sense of responsibility as an American voter. But this was a debate only in the ac...

  • Impeachment process polluted by partisanship

    Rich Manieri|Updated Nov 16, 2019

I’m not sure who to believe anymore. House Intelligence Committee Chairman, and impeachment hearing ringmaster, Adam Schiff, D-Calif., says he doesn’t know the identity of the whistleblower. President Trump says he’s “too busy” to watch the hearings on television. Each claim seems a bit far-fetched. There are multiple reports that members of Schiff’s staff had secret meetings with the whistleblower. And we all know it’s unlike the president to miss, much less ignore, anything said about him by the media or his political opp...

  • Biden is the safe pick and likely to win nomination

    Rich Manieri|Updated Nov 9, 2019

Joe Biden is going to win the Democratic nomination for president. I wouldn’t run to your bookie with this information. My track record is spotty, at best. But I’ll be shocked if I’m wrong and I’ll have plenty of company, including many Democrats. I don’t believe Biden is going to win because he’s putting together a great campaign or because he has the best ideas. In fact, if I were advising the former vice president, I would tell him to take some time off. Don’t do anything or say anything. Just kind of disappear for a while...

  • A look at a few stories you might have missed

    Rich Manieri|Updated Oct 12, 2019

Sure, I could write about impeachment again this week, and probably for countless weeks to come. But I think we all could use a diversion, what with the 24/7 news coverage, analysis, and editorializing that passes for news coverage. It makes you wonder if the earth is still turning on its axis. So, I thought it a public service to highlight some news stories you might have missed because they were barely covered or buried somewhere within the depths of your favorite online news outlet. Here they are, in no particular order:...

  • Objectivity out for New York Times

    Rich Manieri|Updated Sep 21, 2019

Never let the facts get in the way of a good vendetta. Words to live by for politicians and apparently for some news organizations. A New York Times story has reminded Democrats that they still hate Brett Kavanaugh and haven’t come to terms with the fact that he now sits on the Supreme Court. Last Sunday, The Times ran a story describing an incident of sexual misconduct by Kavanaugh when he was in college. The alleged victim never spoke to reporters and told friends she didn’t recall the incident. This rather important tidbit...
