  • Storm brings needed rain to area

    Kevin Wilson CMI staff writer

Rain hit eastern New Mexico hard Wednesday night, with Portales taking the brunt of the inclement weather with about an inch of rain, but emergency crews in both Portales and Clovis reported they responded to no calls for injuries. Mark Fettig, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, said the highest rain total reported in Roosevelt County was 1.1 inches a mile northeast of Portales. The biggest issues in Curry County were with dust and wind, Fettig said, but he noted reports of hail in Texico and...

  • Governor pays visit to cheese plant

    Kevin Wilson CMI staff writer

Gov. Susana Martinez got a slice of local economics Friday during a brief visit to the Southwest Cheese plant in southern Curry County. The first-term governor did not arrive in time for a tour of the plant, but said she hoped to have the time to make the tour on her next visit. She was given a front-row seat in the crowd of business leaders and elected officials, and offered a small bowl of cheese curds created at the facility while SWC Director of Operations George Chappell...

  • Relays taken by Storm

    Kevin Wilson CMI staff writer

As idioms go, something taken by storm was won quickly and convincingly. In Friday's Wildcat Relays at Leon Williams Stadium, taken by the Storm meant pretty much the same thing. CMI correspondent: Joshua Lucero Wildcat Fernando Garcia tosses the javelin 121 feet during qualifying Friday afternoon atthe Wildcat Relays Backed by a 22 1/2-point day from Parker Jones, Cleveland cruised to its second-consecutive team victory in Clovis' signature meet. • Defense dominates at Green-Silver tilt

BLACKWATER DRAW — You can practice the option, the home-run throw up the middle or the quick-out to the sideline all spring. But strap on all the gear, and it usually comes down to turnovers. CMI correspondent photo: Joshua Lucero ENMU sophomore wide receiver Adrian Horton is taken down by defensive back Willie Riley in the second quarter of the Green and Silver scrimmage Saturday morning at Greyhound Stadium. • Odds with Cats in state opener

    Kevin Wilson CMI staff writer

If the Clovis Wildcats are heading into their first-round game with confidence, they've got plenty of reason to do so. Clovis is the fourth seed, and the top four seeds are 27-1 in the first round since the state went to a 16-team bracket in 2006. If the Wildcats were cautious going in, that would be OK, too. Since the format began, a double-digit seed has pulled an upset every season, including last year's win by Manzano in the 3-14 game. Wildcat coach Matt King said the Cats (20-6) are a little of both, but it has nothing...

  • ENMU adds 33 recruits

    Kevin Wilson CMI staff writer

It was a light day for local prep athletes on National Signing Day, but it was a pretty big one for Eastern New Mexico University football. The Greyhounds added 33 athletes on Wednesday, the first day prospects could sign a national letter of intent to play college football next season. "I feel great," said Greyhound coach Josh Lynn, who went in hoping to sign 25 to 35 prospects. "I think we went in, we really needed to get better on our defensive front, and I think we did with some kids. "There's a couple I'm really excited...

  • Hounds hold off hard-luck ACU

    Kevin Wilson CMI staff writer

Things have changed in a matter of weeks for Eastern New Mexico University in the Lone Star Conference. They've gone the other way in a matter of possessions for the Abilene Christian Wildcats. CMI correspondent photo: Joshua Lucero ENMU forward Lawrence Domingo pushes his way around Abilene Christian center Steven Werner during the the first half of Saturday's Lone Star Conference men's game at Greyhound Arena. • MLK plaque recovered in 'pieces' at recycling facility

    Kevin Wilson CMI staff writer

Less than two weeks after Clovis residents celebrated Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy, a plaque located in a city park was stolen and found destroyed Friday morning. Clovis Police Chief Steve Sanders said the 24-by-30 bronze plaque was located ground down and, "unfortunately, in pieces," at Clovis Recycling. Employees there had been warned to be on the lookout for the plaque on the basis of its value as scrap metal. "We've identified a suspect, but no arrest has been made at t...

  • Clovis runs past Hope Christian

    Kevin Wilson CMI staff writer

If his 9-for-9 night at the free throw line or his third-quarter dunk were any indication, senior Drew Cole found his Friday night a lot easier when there wasn't a defender between him and the basket. The third quarter was the same indication for the Wildcats, who ran an efficient transition attack to a 28-point period that paved the way for an 82-68 victory over Hope Christian at Rock Staubus Gymnasium. Cole finished with 17 points, while senior D.J. Blackmon scored 10 of...

  • Rams fall to Moriarty; Lady Rams cruise

    Kevin Wilson CMI staff writer

The Portales Rams are still learning there aren't mulligans on the basketball court, while Moriarty started tough and finished tougher. Luke Thomas scored 17 points, including the go-ahead 3-pointer and a pair of layups in the fourth quarter, and the 4A Pintos held off hard-charging Portales to notch a 56-51 victory Saturday at the Ram Athletic Center. The girls game in the nightcap wasn't nearly as close, with Portales never threatened in a 45-13 victory over the Lady Pintos. Moriarty coach Michael Mondragon, a former guard...

  • EPAC a family affair

    Kevin Wilson CMI staff writer

EPAC. The two-syllable, phonetically-spelled four-letter word that's not really a word is known across southeastern New Mexico as the Eastern Plains Athletic Conference basketball tournament. But a joke could be made that a secondary spelling could be, "Everybody's Practically A Cousin," as quite a few family trees could be compiled just through the years of EPAC rosters. Another generation of high school players became EPAC veterans this week at Melrose High and Eastern New M...

  • Fullerton selected CHS athletic director

    Kevin Wilson CMI staff writer

When Dale Fullerton first assumed the Clovis High athletic director's position in 2003, he did so as a former teacher, principal and assistant coach. Now he's a former superintendent, too, and he's assuming the AD spot again for the Wildcats. Dale Fullerton is set to begin his second stint as Clovis High athletic director. Fullerton, 62, was announced Friday to the position, vacant since May when Brian Stacy resigned as a result of a student disciplinary issue. "I felt like I...

  • Lady Rams dominate Hatch Valley

    Kevin Wilson CMI staff writer

With the kind of start the Portales High girls got off to Friday night, they could have been competitive with pretty much any team in the state. CMI correspondent: Joshua LuceroPHS sophomore McKenzie Bucksath puts up a layup in front of Hatch Valley's Audrey Hackey during Friday's girls matchup in the Portales Shoot Out at the Ram Athletic Center. Against Class 2A Hatch Valley, the result turned out to be pretty noncompetitive, as the Lady Rams led throughout during a 46-17 dr...

  • Eastern New Mexico may get rain, snowfall tonight

    Kevin Wilson CMI staff writer

Eastern New Mexico should be set for a slight rain on Wednesday, joined by snowfall later in the evening. Jennifer Palucki, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, said a storm coming through the area is likely to pull quickly to the east without leaving heavy snowfall in its wake. "Right now, it appears it will begin as rain, and change over to snow Wednesday night," Palucki said. "We're looking at snowfall in the 1-, maybe 2-inch range, but that may be pushing it." Palucki said rainfall in the day...

  • Midwestern State routs Hounds

    Kevin Wilson CMI staff writer

It was a game of runs, and one where Eastern New Mexico University's men were run off their own court. Midwestern State opened the game with a 9-0 blitz, held off Greyhounds comebacks with two separate 8-0 runs before the half, and used a 13-0 burst to blow open what turned into an 82-53 Lone Star Conference rout on Monday at Greyhound Arena. CMI correspondent: Joshua LuceroENMU freshman forward Lawrence Domingo spins inside for a lay-up during the second half of Monday's...

  • Cats pull away after half, beat Portales

    Kevin Wilson CMI staff writer

After spending the first three weeks on the road in a season full of road trips, the Clovis Wildcats had a home opener that would make them tough to beat on any court in the state. That kind of opposition, Portales coach Rickie McBroom said, can only make the visiting Rams better. CMI photo: Kevin WilsonClovis guard John Dawson rises for a dunk over Portales defender Zach Blaeser during the second quarter Friday night at Rock Staubus Gymnasium. • Utility authority solidifies plan for pipeline

    Kevin Wilson CMI staff writer

After months of hearing concerns from Quay County officials about intake structures at the Ute Reservoir, the Eastern New Mexico Water Utility Authority made its stance official on a matter repeatedly brought up by Tucumcari City Commissioner Robert Lumpkin. The authority is responsible for the construction and operation of the Eastern New Mexico Rural Water System, a pipeline project extending from the Ute Reservoir in Quay County to member communities in Curry and Roosevelt counties. That plan includes an intake structure,...

  • Roswell overpowers Rams in season opener

    Kevin Wilson CMI staff writer

The Roswell Coyotes are going to be quite a force in Class 4A when sophomore Alex Olesinski is on the floor. Turns out they're a pretty good team, and a good measuring stick for the Portales Rams, even when Olesinski's on the bench. CMI Correspondnet: Joshua Lucero Portales junior Zach Blaeser pushes past Roswell Coyote Matthew Sedillo on his way to a hook shot in the first half of the Rams game against the Roswell Coyotes Friday evening at the Ram Athletic Center. • Idle time for the shredder

    Kevin Wilson CMI staff writer

I took a few days off last week, and to quote "Office Space" protagonist Peter Gibbons, "I did absolutely nothing, and it was everything I thought it could be." OK, so it was a little bit more, as I discovered that giving me idle time is a terrible idea. With no major renovation project to tackle or ballpark to visit, I was left with idle time. It got used productively, particularly in Christmas shopping, housecleaning, furniture moving, and packing up clothes I didn't need and donating them to people who might. The jury's st...

  • Elida completes trifecta

RIO RANCHO — Throughout Saturday's Class B state title match, Elida senior Shealton Veo-Chenault continually implored her teammates to "Make an impression." RIO RANCHO — The only volleyball champion New Mexico's Class B has ever known is going for a threepeat Saturday morning. And the Elida Tigers will have some familiar company. • Renewable energy, improved transmission discussed at meeting

    Kevin Wilson CMI Staff writer

The state's military base planning committee descended upon Clovis Wednesday afternoon, where members received an update on Cannon Air Force Base and heard about a push for renewable energy and better transmission lines. The committee's quarterly meeting, held at Clovis Community College, took about two hours — including a 20-minute closed session to discuss propriety information, with no action taken afterward. During the meeting, the committee heard updates from Col. Craig Walker, vice commander of the 27th Special O...

  • Trump committed to wasting time

    Kevin Wilson CMI staff writer

A few weeks ago, Donald Trump said he had a bombshell that had the potential to change the election. Cue the lights, and it was revealed Trump just wanted to offer a $5 million donation to the charity of President Obama's choice, in return for Obama's college and passport records. The bombshell fizzled. But Trump thinks he has a winner, and he stuck to it on Twitter. Oct. 26: If my offer is refused, every undecided OH voter will be fully aware that Obama denied $5M to charity all because he is hiding something! Oct. 26: I wan...

  • ENMU alumni share Hurricane Sandy experiences

    Kevin Wilson CMI Staff writer

Leslie Lyte and Tim Johanns are, at best, tangentially connected. They both attended Eastern New Mexico University in Portales, but not together — Johanns graduated in 1997, Lyte in 2005. They both experienced Superstorm Sandy on Monday night, but not really together, with Johanns in Virginia and Lyte in Connecticut. Hurricane Sandy devastated the East Coast, shut down most of New York City and has a death count of more than 30 as of Tuesday evening. But Johanns and Lyte are safe with their loved ones in Sandy's aftermath, th...
