The Lady Rams (9-4) suffered their second loss in as many days, struggling against the length and athleticism of the Lady Eagles (13-0) from the opening tip. PORTALES — Another Eastern Plains Athletic Conference tournament in the books, another win for the Texico Wolverines. Defeating Fort Sumner 48-37, the Wolverines used a big second quarter to out pace the Foxes Saturday night to win their second consecutive EPAC title. The 17-3 run by Texico (10-5) in the second period was just too much for Fort Sumner (9-2) to overcome, despite outscoring the Wolverines for the remainder of the matchup. Foxes coach Brad Holland said, “We got open looks early, but when they aren’t falli...

    David Norton|Updated Jan 7, 2017

PORTALES — Falling 56-49, the Portales Lady Rams had all the opportunity in the world to beat talented Lubbock Trinity Christian on Friday night in the PHS Shoot Out at the Ram Athletic Center. The saying "they couldn't buy a bucket" doesn't do the team's shooting performance justice, as the Lady Rams (9-3) continually struggled from the field, missing shot after shot — whether they were closely guarded or wide open. The Lady Lions (10-11) had no such problems as they put tog...

After a slow start where both teams were mired in turnovers and sloppy play, the second half immediately had a different feel to it, with Clovis coming out of the locker room to tie the game at 17-17. But an 11-2 run to end the quarter sparked by the Lady Rams' Sky Marianito would put the contest out of reach. "I t...

While the Rams (4-0) did a great job of spreading the scoring around, three players carried the load. Led by Jeremy Karngbaye with 18 points, both Junior Ramirez and Ethan Self added 16 each. Both Self and Ramirez hit four 3-pointers apiece, eight of the teams 12, as Portales showed that they don't only command the paint, but the deep ball as well. The M...

PORTALES — With both squads currently undefeated, Portales High basketball teams will have their hands full this weekend, each playing back-to-back games starting tonight. The PHS boys are 3-0 despite a late start due to a majority of their players being a part of the school’s Class 4A state championship football team. According to Rams coach Rickie McBroom, though, the late start has had less of an affect on the team than most would think. “We have a good group of guys first off, but conditioning is always a big conce...
