  • Lady Cats hope for extended Albuquerque stay

    Dave Wagner CNJ sports writer

It's been five years since Clovis High's girls have advanced to Class 5A state team tennis competition, and the Lady Wildcats are going without their top player. Still, the Lady Cats, seeded eighth out of 10 teams, think they have more than a fighting chance to at least get past Friday's opening-round match against ninth-seeded Cibola in Albuquerque. "As long as we come out fighting, we'll be all right," second-year coach Siobahn Liles said. "We're excited; it's been a while...

  • Texico girls fall short in semis

RIO RANCHO — As a freshman, Brianna Reyna has helped carry the Texico Lady Wolverines during a season in which they were essentially rebuilding. Reyna scored 22 points and grabbed 16 rebounds — one more than the entire Navajo Pine team — in Thursday's Class 2A girls state semifinal, enough to keep the Lady Wolverines in the hunt. Coach Richard Luscombe wasn't about to blame her for a late-game turnover that sealed Texico's fate in a 51-49 loss to the Lady Warriors at Santa Ana Star Center. "I never envisioned her having to st...

Greyhound senior wide receiver Chase Kyser gets tripped up by Texas A&M Lion JT. Bates in the second quarter. Kyser lead the Hounds with four receptions for 42 yards. BLACKWATER DRAW — Sometimes kickers share a similar plight to referees and offensive linemen — nobody notices them much unless they screw up. Eastern New Mexico University sophomore Dylan Baca had a tough first half Saturday, helping set up an early Texas A&M-Commerce field goal by shanking a 16-yard punt and...

  • Local cowboys maintain busy rodeo schedule

Steer wrestlers Kurt Stallings and Christian Pettigrew saw both ends of the competitive spectrum this weekend. They each won in a rodeo on Friday night at Fort Sumner — Pettigrew in calf-roping — but both cowboys came up empty in Saturday's competition at the 42nd annual Pioneer Days Rodeo at Curry County Events Center. Stallings, 28, a Texico High graduate whose family moved from Albuquerque to the Clovis area when he was about 15, said it's all in the game. CNJ staff pho...

  • Pioneer Days Rodeo set to begin

    Dave Wagner CNJ sports writer

The 42nd annual Pioneer Days Rodeo kicks off its three-day run today at Curry County Event Center. Around 290 competitors are entered in the rodeo, which begins with "slack" competition today in steer roping. Slack means there are more entrants than can be squeezed into the regular sessions, so they are accommodated with extra sessions. Regular performances are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. today and Saturday and at 2 p.m. Sunday. "This is the first year we've had a matinee performance," said Jerry Fulgham, president of Curry Count...

  • Wildcat boys confident going into state tournament

    Dave Wagner CNJ sports writer

Clovis High's boys were delighted to beat Hobbs for the District 4-5A championship last week at the New Mexico State golf course in Las Cruces. The fact that it was a 10-stroke margin against one of Class 5A's top teams makes them think they might be more competitive than originally thought in the state tournament, scheduled for Monday and Tuesday on the same course. Clovis' girls are one of 11 squads who will be competing on that side of the meet. "I think the district tournament was an eye-opener," CHS boys coach Cal...

"we're going to give it a whirl, have fun and play the best we can play." • Competition expected to be tough in Wildcat Relays

    Dave Wagner CNJ sports writer

Clovis High boys coach Darren Kelley and girls coach Mike Hankins expect to get a good look at much of the top Class 5A competition their teams will see next month at state in today's Clovis Invitational track meet at Leon Williams Stadium. Field events are set to begin at 3 p.m., with running events starting at 4:45 p.m. "The nice thing about this meet is you kind of see where you are," Kelley said. "The top five (teams) here are going to be close to the top five at state." Senior throwers Kenny Betts and Chris Lewis have...
