Motion to transfer Jouett denied

CLOVIS — A motion to transfer accused teenage shooter Nathaniel Jouett to an adolescent treatment facility in Albuquerque was denied this week, following a daylong hearing Friday in Clovis.

Jouett, 17, is accused of killing two and injuring four Aug. 28 at the Clovis-Carver Public Library.

Judge James Hudson, of Roswell, said “the ideal care proposed by the defense is not mandated by the right to reasonable medical care and would unnecessarily impede the need to detain Mr. Jouett as determined by the court,” referencing his decision Friday evening to approve the state’s motion for pre-trial detention.

Hudson ordered “an assessment and evaluation” of Jouett conducted in conjunction with the staff of Sequoyah Adolescent Treatment Facility and Curry County’s Mental Health Resource office, and scheduled a status conference for May 21.
