1973: The Clovis News-Journal was celebrating its 44th anniversary.

The paper was formed in 1929 by the joining of the Clovis News and the Clovis Journal. The Clovis News was started in 1907, and a few years later Thomas Mabry (who went on to become a governor of New Mexico) started the Clovis Journal. They merged under the direction of Mack Stanton.

The Clovis News-Journal article said the newspaper had "kept pace with the growth of Clovis so that today with an estimated population of 30,000, the (paper) has an average weekday circulation of 10,493, and an average Sunday circulation of 11,584."

Forty full-time employees and several part-timers were on staff.

1973: The Eastern New Mexico University-Portales Foundation voted to support a $55,000 fund drive to assist in construction of the proposed Lewis Cooper Rodeo Arena at ENMU.

That money was expected to be matched by an identical grant from the New Mexico Bureau of Outdoor Recreation.

The arena was to be constructed in four phases, with each phase being built as money became available. The first phase was to include the arena, chutes, and pens.

Mrs. Gordon Hatch of Portales chaired the foundation, Eugene Brockman of Tucumcari was vice-chair, Wayne Hunton of Tucumcari was secretary, and Ernest Wheeler Jr., of Portales was treasurer.
