1978: Lee Laughlin of Clovis received the 1977-78 Sertoma Club's Service to Mankind Award, after being nominated by both the Clovis Altrusa Club and the Progress Club of Clovis.

A retired businesswoman, Laughlin was honored for the thousands of hours she had served as a member of the Clovis Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, where she had also served as a member of the board of directors, points chairman of the Pink Ladies, and member of the long-range planning committee.

She was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 1989, but "even with the adversities of ill health" had continued to put the needs of others first, according to one of the clubs that nominated her.

"Lee believes it is a fact that we all must die," her nominator wrote, "but that it is not a fact that we all will live. She has always believed that giving community service is necessary to truly living."

1973: The Floyd Broncos boys basketball team captured the district 6AA title with a 56-43 win over the Dora Coyotes, while the top-seeded Elida Tigers managed a third-place overall finish, defeating the Melrose Buffaloes, 72-67.

Voyle Jones poured in 19 points for Floyd in the championship effort, assisted by Forrest Jones' 16 points, outpacing the Coyotes who were led by Stephen Thetford with 11 points.

In the consolation game, Elida had three players in double figures: Charlie Rogers with 25, Dan Howard with 18, and Barry Lambirth with 10. Melrose's top three scorers were Craig Kerr with 12, and Kenny Reed and Terry Christiansen with 10 each.

Elida had finished the season in first place, but was defeated by Floyd in the opening round of district tournament play.
