1983: The newly formed Farmers Association of Conservation Tillers held its second meeting in Clovis, with 20 farmers in attendance.

President Lonnie Mitchell said the group was dedicated to helping "prevent people from making the same mistakes" in using conservation tillage farming methods — practices designed to protect soil, lower water use and shorten work time.

Mitchell credited Scotty Savage of the Soil Conservation Service with "kind of getting us started with the idea."

Those in attendance heard presentations on no-till farming, the federal payment-in-kind (PIK) program, and liquid fertilizers.

1973: Cold weather and intermittent snowfall hadn't slowed runners and bicyclists in the second annual Portales Marathon.

On the contrary, Larry Blancett, a member of the Albuquerque Track Club, covered the 26,2 miles in 2 hours, 23 minutes and 28 seconds, which the Clovis News-Journal reported was the fastest marathon time recorded in New Mexico.

The race was from Eastern New Mexico University's Physical Education Complex to the Roosevelt/Curry county line and back.

The original 9 a.m. start time was delayed by two hours to allow for the course to thaw a bit for the 79 runners and 25 bicyclists.
