Reporter's notebook: Ash Wednesday on the go

CLOVIS — Over-scheduled Christians will have a chance to celebrate Ash Wednesday from the comfort of their car thanks to today’s Ashes To Go service at St. James Episcopal Church.

The ceremonial drawing of a cross on one’s forehead, known as the imposition of ashes, is generally part of a longer Ash Wednesday service to celebrate the first day of Lent. But with everyone’s busy schedules, some churchgoers are finding they don’t have the time.

So from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. outside the front of the church, located at the corner of 12th and Main in Clovis, Pastor Alan Brockmeier said a quicker imposition of ashes will be available for anyone who walks or drives up.

Brockmeier said the church started the Ashes To Go service last year after reading about its introduction at other churches. He was happy with last year’s turnout of about 15 people and said there has been increased interest so he thinks even more people will take advantage of the service today.
