Portales basketball preview capsules

February 13, 2018

BOYS

Portales (13-10, 3-3) at NMMI (3-16, 0-7), 7 p.m.

Last time out: The Rams held off Ruidoso, 60-51, on Friday night. The Colts lost to Moriarty on Friday, 47-27.

Last meeting: Portales beat NMMI, 59-36, on Jan. 26.

Notes: The Rams need the win to stay ahead of Ruidoso for third place in 4A-District 4, and with Hope Christian coming to town on Saturday night, a win tonight becomes that much more important. Portales let NMMI hang around for awhile in January’s meeting, but Tyrese Dawson’s three consecutive 3-pointers to end the first half put a lid on that. All told, Dawson scored 12 points on four 3’s in the first half of that game. The Colts, meanwhile, are seeking their first league win of the year, in what is their final regular season game.

GIRLS

Portales (22-2, 5-0) at Hope Christian (12-12, 2-3), 6 p.m.

Last time out: Portales took down Ruidoso, 69-22, last Friday night. Hope Christian’s last game also came against the Warriors, beating Ruidoso, 65-41, last Tuesday night.

Last meeting: The Lady Rams beat the Huskies, 57-31, on Feb. 2.

Notes: The Rams hope to extend their current 13-game winning streak that much further, as tonight marks their regular-season finale. Portales beat Ruidoso last Friday to earn on outright 4A-District 4 regular season title in just its second year in the league. The Rams will now get to host the district tournament title game, but first, they’ll look to take down last year’s district champion, Hope, for a second time this season. Less than two weeks ago, Portales dominated Hope from start to finish. The Rams led by 12 after one period, and carried a 29-6 lead into intermission. Zamorye Cox had 14 points by halftime, and 10 points after the first quarter, alone. As for the Huskies, their .500 record is pretty indicative of their season, as they’ve outscored opponents by just 14 points overall, and carry just a 5-5 record at their home gym.
