Mustang women top ENMU for first win of season

February 7, 2018

SILVER CITY, N.M. — The Greyhound women's basketball team has had a season of highs, including beating nationally-ranked West Texas A&M on the road last month and upsetting Lone Star Conference leading Texas A&M-Commerce on Saturday.

It's fair to say Eastern New Mexico found its low Tuesday night, with Western New Mexico claiming a 60-59 win at Drag's Court over the Greyhounds for its first victory this season in 23 tries.

Cara Fields scored 16 points to lead four in double figures for Mustangs (1-22, 1-14 LSC), who led by double figures midway through the second quarter and withstood a series of Greyhound rallies.

Only five players scored for the Mustangs, but everybody who did score chipped in at least nine, ending with Rachel Francisco. The other double-figure scorers were Takiyah Lopez with 13, Melody McLaughlin with 12 and Jade Botelho with 10.

Dating back to last season, the Mustangs had lost 23 straight and 43 of their previous 44. The Mustangs had, however, come on late, with their previous three losses decided by a combined 20 points.

Daeshi McCants led the Greyhounds with 20 points and just missed a double-double with nine rebounds, while Dasia Johnson added 10 on 4-of-7 shooting. Freshman Alivia Lewis scored just three points but pulled down a game-high 11 boards.

A back-and-forth second half seemed to turn the Greyhounds' way when Mikaehla Connor's layup with 4:42 left capped off a 7-2 run to give ENMU a 57-56 advantage. But the Mustangs answered with a McLaughlin jumper and the Greyhounds to 0-of-5 shooting the rest of the way — including three missed jumpers in the final 14 seconds.

The game featured four lead changes and no ties.

The Greyhounds are back in action Thursday when they travel to Texas Woman's for a 6 p.m. MST tipoff.
