Clovis High girls defeat Manzano

ALBUQUERQUE — To have any chance at finishing second in District 2-6A, the Clovis Wildcats needed to finish out the season with a three-game winning streak.

One down, two to go. Behind a quick start from Teya Morris and a solid defensive effort throughout, Clovis took a 48-38 win Tuesday night at Manzano.

Morris scored 10 of her game-high 19 points in an 18-10 first quarter that set the tempo for the night.

"The scoring start was fantastic," Clovis coach Jeff Reed said. "I would have liked to play better defense, but 10 is not bad. (Manzano's Alicia) Cordova hit two threes in that quarter, but that's all she scored for the game.

"They went to a box-and-one against Teya, and we had to make a lot of in-game adjustments."

Reed credited senior Sydni Hill, who scored six points, for a solid job on defense against Mya Williams - who averages 14 points a game but was held to just three on the evening.

The Monarchs (5-16, 1-6) had to make adjustments in the fourth quarter with a 35-30 deficit, which freed up Morris to score six in the fourth.

Morgan Kayeman led Manzano with seven points. Mikyla Harkley and Antanishwa Molett each scored seven for Clovis, which is back in action Saturday at home against Santa Fe.
