Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities

5 things to know about... last week

1. A man taken into the Curry County Adult Detention Center Thursday suffered life-threatening injuries from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Wesley Flores, 28, of Clovis, was rushed to Plains Regional Medical Center following a four-hour standoff with law enforcement. Jail Administrator Mark Gallegos said no jail personnel were harmed in the incident.

Flores, arrested on a failure to appear on charges of felon in possession of a firearm and unauthorized credit card usage, produced a gun during the detention officer’s pre-booking pat down and took the officer hostage.

The officer was eventually let go, and multiple attempts to bring Flores out of an isolated room were unsuccessful before 6:45, the approximate time Sheriff Wesley Waller said Flores shot himself.

Clovis police have declined comment on how the gun was not discovered before Flores arrived at the jail.

2. Lonnie Allsup, whose name is synonymous with convenience throughout Texas and New Mexico, died last Sunday in his Clovis home. He was 84.

Allsup and his wife Barbara Allsup opened “Lonnie’s Drive-In Grocery” in Roswell in 1956. They grew that chain into a dozen stores before selling it in 1963 and starting the Allsup’s convenience stores a year later. The company today has 318 stores in about 160 communities with 3,000 employees.

Allsup’s was one of the first stores to offer groceries, gas and fast food.

3. Three Cannon Air Force Base airmen were jailed in Clovis, charged with raping a fourth airman at a party on Jan. 27.

Snapchat videos taken during the party assisted law enforcement officers in arresting the suspects, court records show.

District Attorney Andrea Reeb said her office will prosecute the case.

A grand jury is scheduled to hear the case on Feb. 9.

4. The longtime postmaster at Texico retired on Wednesday.

Lonnie Pickel, 70, started working for the U.S. Postal Service 40 years ago.

He had been postmaster in Texico for 24 years.

5. Eastern New Mexico University kicked off its month-long celebration of black history.

A Feb. 21 event will feature African and Caribbean cuisine. It begins at 1 p.m. in the Family and Consumer Sciences kitchen at ENMU. More information: http://www.enmu.edu
