1978: In honor of Groundhog Day, eight students from Parkview Elementary School in Clovis posed for a Clovis News-Journal photographer around what turned out to be a ground squirrel's hole, waiting for the varmint to emerge in search of a shadow.
Lisa Baird, Sheryl Finney, Raymond Gallegos, Patsy Gentry, Darryl Perales, Karen Roberts, Donnie Stilwell and Prany Thephapine, all sixth-graders at Parkview, reported that the ground squirrel did not see its shadow on the overcast day, hinting that spring was on the way.
The National Weather Service, however, disagreed, noting that the average last frost date for Curry County was mid-April.
1973: Longtime Eastern New Mexico University Regent Ernest Wheeler Jr. of Portales was reappointed by New Mexico Gov. Bruce King to another term on the university's governing board.
William Brainerd of Roswell received the nod to become the newest regent, succeeding Donald Anderson, also of Roswell.
The regents were scheduled to meet the following week in the office of ENMU President Charles Meister.
