Recent numbers on impaired driving provided by Clovis police indicate a plateau or slight drop in DWI arrests, but a rise in alcohol-related crashes.
Records show two DWI arrests for the last three days of the years 2016 and 2017, but an increase from two to three arrests in the first five days in the corresponding new year.
From a larger perspective, total DWI arrests in the years 2015, 2016 and 2017 were 97, 98 and 93, respectively.
Those numbers are somewhat promising for the slight drop overall in DWI, but what’s more disturbing is the rise in alcohol-related crashes during the same time frame: police noted just 15 in the year 2015, then 23 in 2016 and a three-year high of 28 in 2017.
What’s worse than getting busted? Getting hurt, or getting killed.
“If you care about the people you are with, don’t let them drive after drinking,” CPD Capt. Roman Romero said this month. “This simple action could save their livelihood, and even their life.”
