GIRLS

Clovis (8-6) at Goddard (10-6)

5:30 p.m., Goddard High School

Last time out: Both teams played Friday night with different results — Clovis lost at Artesia 56-38; Goddard routed Alamogordo 54-24, leading 15-5 after one quarter, 26-7 at halftime.

Last meeting: The teams clashed at Rock Staubus Gymnasium last Jan. 10, with Goddard earning a decisive 63-45 road victory.

The lowdown: They’ve been up, they’ve been down. They’ve shot well, they haven’t.

Friday night’s loss was a case of the ‘downs’ and the ‘haven’ts’, as the Lady Wildcats stayed within reach during the first half, but just didn’t play well in the second half, according to a frustrated head coach Jeff Reed, who said the team wasn’t there mentally or physically. Though it’s not a make-or-break game for their season, it seems the Lady Wildcats need to get this one, for their record and for the mental aspect.

BOYS

Clovis (7-7) at Goddard (8-8)

7 p.m., Goddard High School

Last time out: Clovis played its second game of the season against Hobbs, this time on the road, and came away with a 77-52 loss. Goddard tasted defeat, but in much more heartbreaking fashion, falling 62-61 at Alamogordo after having led 48-44 heading into the fourth quarter.

Last meeting: Last Jan. 10, Clovis came into the game at The Rock desperately needing a win after three straight blowout losses. And the Wildcats got what they needed, beating Goddard 51-48.

The lowdown: A 7-7 Clovis team and 8-8 Goddard squad makes the stakes here kind of obvious, as tonight’s winner will find itself on the fun side of .500.

Whichever team wins also starts some new momentum, as district competition draws ever closer. Clovis was doing a lot of things right during its impressive six-game win streak, five wins of which were of the blowout variety.
