PORTALES — A 13-year-old Portales boy died of a gunshot wound Monday night, according to information from the Portales Police Department.
Police did not identify the child.
According to Det. Charlie Smart of the PPD:
• At approximately 4:50 p.m. Monday, police and paramedics responded to a call in reference to a gunshot victim. Upon arrival, officers found a young male not breathing with what appeared to be a head wound.
• The boy was transported to Roosevelt General Hospital, and shortly after airlifted to Lubbock.
• The boy succumbed to injury at approximately 8:30 p.m. Central time.
• The investigation, as of Tuesday morning, indicated an accidental discharge of a firearm.
Smart declined to release any other information on the incident.
