Our People: Following father's footsteps

Jonathan Martinez was born and raised in Clovis. He graduated from Clovis High School in 2006 and married Heather Martinez in 2009. The couple have five children.

Martinez didn't claim to be a big sports fanatic growing up. Instead, he preferred working with his hands. He enjoys mechanic work, wood working and building things. He was also involved in ag during school.

He has been involved in the church all his life. Martinez and his wife became counselors for domestic violence victims through Legacy Life Church between 2012-2014. Martinez has attended Legacy Life for most of life, starting when the church was formerly known as House of Prayer.

Martinez also has a love for coaching and has coached softball for 10 years. Softball is his family's sport, he said, and most members of his family play the sport.

Martinez is the son of Lisa and Eddie Martinez, his father being the owner operator of Eddie's Subs in Clovis.

Jonathan has been working in the business both officially and unofficially for 20 years, where he started busing tables at age 10. One day he hopes to continue his father's legacy of running the family business.

What do you like about working at a restaurant?

I enjoy the customers. They sort of become family, too. We have a lot of regulars.

What don't you like about the food business?

I don't like how much the health department changes each year. There are certain standards to comply with but it seems like it's always changing.

When you were a kid, what did you think you'd be doing as an adult?

I wanted to be a police officer. I have an uncle who is a state police officer. He used to show me the ropes but he doesn't live here now.

What's your favorite taste?

I like the hamburgers at our restaurant.

What's your favorite smell?

Roasting green chile.

What do you do when you're not working?

I just like to spend time with my family and ride my motorcycle as much as I can.

If you could master one instrument, what would it be?

The accordion. They call it the squeeze box. I love the sound of it.

Favorite place to travel?

Lake Charles, Louisiana is a place I like to go. They have good food in Louisiana.

What is your theme song or favorite song?

I don't have a favorite song but my favorite artist is Alan Jackson. The song of his that comes to mind is "Chattahoochee."

What do you envision your life being like in 10 years?

I see myself as business owner and continuing to make memories with family and friends.
