Big third quarter lifts ENMU women to win

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — The Greyhounds used a 16-4 third quarter run to erase an eight-point deficit, and then proceeded to hang on to a one-possession lead in the closing stages to notch a 52-45 win Saturday over St. Mary’s.

The Hounds (5-5) have now won back-to-back games for just the second time this season.

Trailing by eight, 26-18, to start the third quarter, Eastern (5-5) began its 16-4 run by scoring eight-straight points to tie the game at 26-all, thanks to a jumper and a layup from Daeshi McCants.

Tia Mason helped the Rattlers (5-8) regain the lead with a bucket of her own, before Brandi Gomez drilled a 3 to help ENMU go ahead by a point. After a St. Mary’s made free throw, a pair of Gomez made free throws gave the Hounds the lead for the final time on the afternoon.

Jumpers by Dasia Johnson and Shelby Jones extended the ENMU lead to seven with just 4:27 to play, but the Rattlers would not go down quietly. A 5-0 run pulled the Rattlers to within two, 47-45, with 72 seconds left to play.

McCants would go to the line and split her free throws to extend the lead to three with 20 seconds left to play, giving St. Mary’s an opportunity to still tie the game. However, Gomez stepped in front of a Kealani Marquez pass and drained both of her free throws to put the game on ice.

McCants led the way with a double-double, as she had both 14 points and 14 rebounds. Gomez, meanwhile, was 4-for-4 from the charity stripe and scored 13 points. Eastern outrebounded St. Mary’s, 51-40, and had a significant 18-7 points off of turnovers advantage.

The Greyhounds will return home to face Lubbock Christian 2 p.m. Dec. 30. The Lady Chaps are 10-1 on the season, with their only loss coming to defending national champion Ashland.
