On this date ...

1977: Evelyn Chambers of Portales had won the "adults over age 24" division of the State Make-It-Yourself-With-Wool competition held in Roswell.

Janette Ward of Clovis captured the title in the senior 18-24 division, and Shelley Harvey of Carlsbad won the junior 14-17 division.

The three earned the right to represent New Mexico at the National Make-It-Yourself-With-Wool competition the following month in Denver.

1972: The three-man crew of Apollo 17, including New Mexico's Harrison Schmitt, blasted off from Cape Kennedy, Florida, on a lunar landing mission.

A few days later, Schmitt became the first scientist-astronaut to walk on the moon.

Apollo 17 was the last scheduled manned Apollo mission. Schmitt was the lunar module pilot for the mission, and he was accompanied by Eugene Cernan (spacecraft commander) and Ronald Evans (command module pilot).
