Clovis girls drop opener at Hobbs

HOBBS — The Lady Wildcats expected Tuesday night’s season opener against Hobbs to be a tough draw and boy, were they right.

Though they kept it close early, the Lady ’Cats lost by a 72-48 margin to one of the state’s best teams.

“It’s a tough road game when it’s the first road game of the season,” Clovis head coach Jeff Reed said. “But I’ve been telling people for a long time, we need to know where we are. So we need to put it in perspective.

“I was glad that we didn’t lay down and get blown out by 40 or 50,” Reed added. “I hate saying it because I’m competitive, but losing to Hobbs by 24, it’s not the worst thing that could’ve happened.”

Clovis trailed only 15-10 after the first quarter, but was outscored 26-12 in the second, putting the Lady Eagles in command.

“They took over,” Reed said. “The thing is, we had times and moments when we cut it close and they would go on a 10-0 run pressing us. ... But for our first game at a hostile environment like that, we had moments where we did big things and good stuff, then we had moments where we threw the ball away, and you can’t do that against Hobbs. There’s very little margin for error when you’re playing Hobbs, especially in Hobbs.”

Teya Morris paced the Lady Wildcats with 15 points, the only Clovis player to crack double digits. Brittni Chavez was close, with eight points.

Hobbs’ Za’kiah Griffin led all scorers with 19.

Clovis will host in the Strength and Sass Shootout this weekend.
