DUMAS, Texas — Clovis High’s boys basketball team notched its first milestone of the young season by netting its first win, 65-41, Tuesday night at Dumas High School.
Boosted by 21-point second and fourth quarters allowed the Wildcats to bag that first "W," move to 1-1 and bounce back nicely from Saturday’s 75-70 home loss to Rio Rancho.
“Always good to get that first win under your belt,” Wildcat coach Scott Robinson said. “It kind of takes that pressure off to get a win. Everybody feels a lot better. Always good to get it.”
Clovis registered the victory with balanced scoring. Dewayne Dawson, Jacob Moon and Brandon Romero led the Wildcats with nine points each. Jakeem Wynn added eight points, followed by Mason Figueroa with seven, Bryce Cabeldue with six. That display of balance was a result of some serendipity, actually, after Wynn and Romero got into early foul trouble.
“It’s good to see that many guys in the scoring column,” Robinson said. “It gives them some confidence and it’s good to know we’ve got some guys that can come off the bench and score for us.”
Clovis led only 12-10 after one quarter, but outscored Dumas 21-14 in the second, going up 33-24 at halftime. The Wildcats led by 12 after the third quarter, then blew the game open even wider by outscoring Dumas 21-9 in the fourth.
The Wildcats host Hobbs at Rock Staubus Gymnasium on Friday, with a 7 p.m tipoff time scheduled.
