Angels on 'earth duty' make life a little sweeter

Sometimes, it’s the little things that make the biggest impression.

I had an unexpected, yet welcome, surprise one recent week. A few of them, actually. As it turns out, each of these surprises coincided with a difficult situation.

I mentioned these things to a friend, who immediately said it was nothing more than coincidence. I don’t believe in coincidence; but, I do believe in divine intervention. Coincidence or divine intervention, I’m grateful for the angels who are pulling “earth duty.”

I went through my favorite coffee hut, bleary-eyed and weary. That didn’t bode well for the day, since dawn had barely cracked. When I tried to pay, I was told rather cheerily that the car in front of me had picked up the tab.

The day became brighter.

Same week, different day, I ran a quick errand and left my office door open. I came back to find four chocolate kisses with a sticky note that said, “Hope your day is sweet!”

The day became sweeter.

Wednesday evening, I d-r-a-g-g-e-d myself to choir, and rehearsed “The Power of Your Love” that I’m singing with someone who has the voice of an angel. I’m an alto, so I always worry about hitting the high notes. Rehearsal wasn’t awful, as evidenced by the fact that she didn’t smack me. She did, however, tell me that when I had a high note, I stood on my tiptoes, and then she laughed. So did I, and my spirit felt lighter.

A bit of the day’s weariness lessened.

Wrestling with some tough situations, I struggled with feeling overwhelmed and questioning just about everything. In the midst of the struggle, I hear the voice of a dear friend reminding me that we cannot do everything at 100 percent all the time. Choose what needed 100 percent, and work my way through the pile from there.

Now, I have a fork sitting at the base of my computer monitor, reminding me to tackle things one bite at a time.

It’s easy to be grateful when things are going well. It’s harder when we’re in the midst of a struggle, or struggles. The angels pulling “earth duty” make it less of a struggle. There is something to be said for the sweet gestures, simple kindnesses, bits of laughter, that people gift to us. Those small things become great things because they remind us we’re all connected. We may be on different paths, but we’re all on a journey. And the journey is all the richer because of these small things.
