Volleyball roundup: Clovis swept, Texico tops Elida

ALBUQUERQUE — The La Cueva Bears are back to a winning streak. The Clovis Wildcats are still trying to end a losing skid.

The host Bears got stronger as Tuesday night went on and scored a 25-20, 25-18, 25-9 District 2-6A sweep over the Wildcats. It is the second-straight win for the Bears (12-1, 4-1), who took their second-straight match after a five-set loss to Sandia ended their 10-match season-opening streak.

Clovis, meanwhile, dropped its fourth straight. Still, Clovis coach Ruth Chavez said she was happy with the effort against a highly-regarded La Cueva squad.

“I thought we played very well tonight,” Chavez said. “They’re a very athletic team. They can bounce balls very well. The first two games, we were right there. I was proud of our effort. It was a good night for us.”

Kassidy Furrow had five kills to lead Clovis, while Kameron Kelley had four kills and two blocks. Jada Gillespie finished with 23 assists.

Clovis (8-6, 1-4) continues district play Saturday, when it hosts Eldorado.

Texico 3, Elida 0

At Texico, Maryelle Dickerman had 12 kills and seven blocks as the host Wolverines sent the Tigers to their first defeat in 13 matches this season.

Riley Thompson added 10 kills, while Kaylee Miller and Baylee Sours each posted 13 assists for Texico (11-4).

Both teams return to district play Saturday, with Texico hosting Tucumcari in District 5-3A and Elida visiting San Jon in District 4-1A.

Melrose 3, Grady 1

At Grady, the Buffaloes improved to 5-1 in District 4-1A play, with Nataley Mondragon posting 10 kills, four aces and five blocks.

Brette DeVaney had 14 blocks and Landry Widner 23 assists for Melrose (11-5).

Yara Sotelo had 16 kills and 15 digs for Grady, which hosts San Jon on Tuesday.
