1967: At a meeting of the Portales Valley Project (PVP), the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation issued a report suggesting that drilling 86 wells in state land in Blackwater Draw "would supply most of their farms with enough water until the year 2010," according to the Clovis News-Journal.

Several members of the Water Rights for the New Mexico Landowners Association were in attendance at the Portales Municipal Building to dispute the findings.

Charles Marshall, secretary for that association, specifically attacked a portion of the report that showed water potential under 30 sections of land near the Texas line in the sandhill area northeast of Portales, claiming it was "pure speculation," as no wells had yet been drilled in that area.

1957: Friends and family of Mr. and Mrs. G.A. Thornton were invited to a party to celebrate the couple's golden wedding anniversary.

The Thorntons came to Curry County in 1909 and had lived on a farm near Pleasant Hill and in Clovis since that time.

Their son, Ardale Thornton, planned the celebration with help from family friends.
