Wanted: Some good help in Clovis

Finding good help nowadays is seemingly getting tougher and tougher.

Now I’m certainly not saying that there aren’t good people out there. To the contrary: I know there are great potential employees out there who can help any business become better.

It just seems like it’s getting more difficult to find them.

I’ve had numerous conversations with current business owners and managers in the area in recent weeks, and the theme tends to be quite similar. They all have openings and are looking to hire, yet they aren’t able to find interested and capable candidates.

Sadly, I’ve seen it firsthand lately.

Case in point: We have an advertising sales position open, a spot we’ve advertised locally and nationally for more than a month. We heard from three particularly promising applicants who live in Clovis with resumes that made them appear to be good fits for the role.

We’re never going to find out, unfortunately.

We lined up interviews with each. And then each of the three failed to show up for those discussions. Yup, three no-call no-shows.

Talk about frustrating!

Similar business leaders in the community are facing the same difficulties. In some cases, they find who they think is someone who’s a good fit. That was the case just recently at a local company. Then, the “new hire” didn’t make it through their first day — quitting on the spot just a few hours into their shift.

We reported last week that the local Sears store in the North Plains Mall is closing its doors by the end of the year. The parent company, Sears Holdings, will have closed nearly 300 stores this year. That includes both Sears and Kmart department stores under its corporate umbrella.

Inside our local store, there are numerous local people who just received the bad news that they no longer will have a job by the time Christmas rolls around. These are people who probably enjoy their roles and take great pride in what they do.

So with that said, let’s take an out-of-the-box approach to hiring.

If you’re a Sears worker who is getting cast aside, or simply another talented worker in the area who is looking for a new opportunity, sharpen up those resumes and send them our way.

If you’re up to the task of a high-energy, fast-paced job as a newspaper advertising sales rep, my email is below. I’d love to hear from you.
