ENMU continues streak of record fall enrollment

September 13, 2017

PORTALES — It was a close margin, but Eastern New Mexico University has continued its 21-year streak of record fall enrollment.

According to a release Tuesday from the school, the 2017 fall enrollment is 6,027 — 4,599 undergraduate and 1,428 graduate students — for the highest numbers in the school’s 82-year history.

“I was glad to see that we continued our 20-plus year trend of growing our enrollment,” first-year ENMU president J.S. Elwell said in the release. “This year’s record of 6,027 represents a modest increase of 13 students, but also continues to show why we are considered the best university in New Mexico for student success.”

The university credited small increases in first-time freshmen (0.8 percent) and graduate (0.5 percent) numbers, along with 63 percent freshmen retention compared to 59 percent last year.

“I attribute our continued enrollment increases to caring faculty and staff and a family-like atmosphere on our campus,” Elwell said. “Over the past several years we have initiated a number of retention programs that have paid off. Our retention grew by more than 3.5 percent this year, and I am hopeful that the new Greyhound Connection program elicits similar increases next year.”

The school’s fall enrollment has grown by 68 percent from its 3,581 students in 2000.
