Curry officials approve property tax rate increase

September 13, 2017

CLOVIS — The Curry County Commission on Tuesday approved a 3 percent property tax rate increase for 2017.

Assessor Candace Morrison said the increase was negligible, especially compared to rate increases of 7 to 8 percent in previous years.

The 3.026 percent increase amounts to “three dollars per thousand dollars of taxable valuation,” Morrison said, and reflects fluctuations among school districts, residential and non-residential categories across Clovis, Texico, Melrose and Grady.

Morrison attributed the rate increases in previous years to a recent decrease in construction and growth. Local jurisdictions do not have any control over the rates, she said, which are determined annually by the Department of Finance Authority. The county only has five days to approve them following the notification.

All commissioners were present for the special meeting and voted unanimously to approve the rate increases.
