Regional high school football roundup

TATUM — The Dora Coyotes lost for the first time this season in a high-scoring game at Tatum that featured seven lead changes in just the first quarter.

The final lead change belonged to Tatum, which went on for a 69-44 victory.

“It just kind of seemed like we never got off the bus in some ways,” Dora coach Mason McBee said. “Everything that could go wrong did.”

McBee added that the loss was a humbling experience for the team and will give them something to work on at practice this week.

Dora could not stop Tatum’s duo of quarterback Sebastian Jimenez and wide receiver Cristian Marizacal who connected with each other for five touchdowns.

“On defense we missed several assignments, we showed a huge lack of discipline,” McBee said.

McBee said that defensive breakdowns and blown coverages on third and fourth down really came back to hurt Dora.

Dora scored four touchdowns in the opening quarter, including a kick return for a touchdown on the opening kickoff. The Coyotes continued to score and finished with 44 points, but could not slow down Tatum’s offense enough to secure the win.

“Even after (the first quarter) we were scoring the ball every four or five plays, we were kind of scoring at will,” McBee said.

McBee said that some players are still making the adjustment from six-man to eight-man, but he feels they will be able to make the necessary changes.

Farwell 42, Crosbyton 26

Farwell earned its first win of the season with a 16-point road victory over Crosbyton.

Both teams displayed a ground-and-pound offense with Farwell out-rushing Crosbyton 300-279.

Farwell trailed for just three minutes early in the second quarter before Miguel Vasquez scored the first of his five rushing touchdowns to put the Steers ahead for good.

“He had a great game. He ran well and kind of carried us,” Farwell coach Danny Brittain said.

Farwell successfully bore down defensively on third and fourth down, holding the Chiefs to 4-for-16 on third and 3-for-8 on fourth.

“We gave up a couple big plays, but overall I thought we did well,” Brittain said of his defense. “We had some kids move around and try to find the right fit for kids, and I think we found the right spot for some of them.”

Bovina 54, Shamrock 14

Bovina rolled over Shamrock for the Mustangs' second straight win to begin the season, highlighted by a four-touchdown second quarter.

Bovina showcased a balanced attack on offense, tallying 275 yards through the air, led by quarterback David Lara and his four touchdowns, and 245 yards on the ground, where Marco Sanchez added 123 yards and a touchdown.

The Mustangs took advantage of the Irish’s mistakes, securing four fumbles and two interceptions, while Bovina did not have any turnovers.

The Mustangs limited Shamrock to just 131 yards on offense.

Snyder 37, Muleshoe 34

Muleshoe dropped its second straight game following a back-and-forth affair with Snyder decided by a Tigers field goal with seven seconds remaining.

“It was a they-score, we-score, they-score kind of game. It just came down to the last seven seconds,” Muleshoe coach David Wood said.

Trailing by seven in the fourth quarter, the Mules scored to knot the game at 34 before Snyder’s game-winning kick.

“It was kind of a heartbreaking game after the week before, but it was an exciting game. We learned a lot. It’s something we can look at and get better.”

Jojo Rejino, Julian Astorga, and Ian Hasley each earned 12 tackles for Muleshoe defensively, while Jacob Kettner tallied 11.

Animas 52, Floyd 6

Floyd fell to 0-2 on the season with a lopsided loss to Animas. Yet despite that big scoring difference, Broncos coach Steve Foust liked the way his team competed.

“It was more competitive than what the score said,” Foust said.

Foust said Floyd got better as the game went on but just could not make up for some early mistakes.

“A couple key mistakes kept us from scoring but we got better and we’re going to be better down the road,” Foust said.

Fort Sumner 54, Texico 20

Texico dropped its third straight game to start the season in a 34-point loss at Fort Sumner. The Wolverines (0-3) got off to a good start defensively, holding the Foxes to just one score in the first quarter.

Without middle linebacker Chris Harrison, Texico struggled to stop Fort Sumner’s offense in the second quarter, allowing three more scores before halftime.

The Foxes moved to 3-0.
