Looking ahead from 9/11

David Stone, American Legion plan ceremonies.

David Stone plans to look back and remember as usual on Monday. But the James Polk Stone Community banker in Portales also is looking ahead.

“Back after World War II, America got up and we picked up our heads and went on with life united,” Stone said.

“Nowadays we as American people forget how to reunite with one another and (are) quick to label each other.”

And so Stone plans to focus his annual 9/11 ceremony — scheduled for 7:30 a.m. Monday outside the bank at 109 E. Second St. in Portales — on the future.

“After 9/11 we are more prepared and can’t forget how it united us together, but we’ve gone off the path,” Stone said. “Lack of descipline in the U.S. is allowing people to create havoc in our country and safety needs to be a key factor in the U.S., and we can do that by being united again, and that is exactly what I will address: How to reunite America.”

Monday marks 16 years since four coordinated terrorist attacks killed almost 3,000 people, injured 6,000 more and caused billions of dollars worth of property damage in New York, Virginia and Pennsylvania.

American Legion Post 25 in Clovis also plans to hold its annual memorial for 9/11 victims.

It’s scheduled for 9 a.m. Monday at 2400 W. Seventh St. in Clovis.
