ENMU volleyball gets first win in dramatic fashion

Hounds rally from 0-2 deficit to top Colorado Christian

LUBBOCK, Texas — Calling Friday’s Eastern New Mexico-Colorado Christian volleyball match surprising and unpredictable would be understating it.

First, the Greyhounds seemed doomed, seven points away from getting swept in their second match of the Lubbock Christian Tournament. Then it appeared they had taken control and would go storming to a five-set victory. Then it seemed they might squander a fifth-set advantage and lose in heartbreaking fashion.

Ultimately, though, Eastern held on in the fifth, winning 3-2, with set scores of 11-25, 12-25, 27-25, 25-16, 15-12. It was quite a way for the Lady Greyhounds to notch their first victory of the season, and maybe some karma for their earlier match against Colorado Mesa. In that one, ENMU took a 2-0 lead only to lose in five.

After dropping those first two sets against Colorado Christian, Eastern trailed 18-12 in the third. But the Lady ’Hounds had a comeback in their bones and started digging deep to find it, quickly closing to within 19-16, then 20-19.

Soon the third set was tied at 21, but not for long, as the Hounds won the next point to grab their first lead since early in the set. Colorado Christian tied it at 22, again at 23 after Eastern had taken another one-point lead, and again at 24, meaning the victor would have to win by two, regardless of the final score.

Eastern went up 25-24, but Colorado Christian won the next point to forge yet another tie. The Greyhounds dug deep again and won the last two points, bagging a 27-25 victory to keep the match going.

The Greyhounds led 13-9 in the fifth set, but Colorado Christian whittled the difference to 13-12 before Eastern closed it out with the final two points.

Alexis Aguirre rang up 26 assists, six digs, four kills and two aces for Eastern. Andrea Aguilar had 21 digs and four assists. Kaitlyn Kluna supplied 21 assists, five digs, three aces and one kill. And Destyni Brooks chipped in with 17 digs, two blocks, two kills, one assist and one ace.

In the early match against Colorado Mesa, Eastern eked out 25-23 wins in the first two sets, then lost the next two by 17-25 scores, and dropped the deciding set 11-15.

The Greyhounds are back in action again today, facing Southwestern Oklahoma at noon and the tournament host Chaps at 4 p.m.
