1992: Locals were busy helping in the relief effort for Hurricane Andrew a few days after it slammed into the Florida panhandle.

Ernie Kos, director of the United Way in Clovis, said, "Our phone has been ringing non-stop from people wanting to know what they can do to help."

Robert Sain, manager of the Clovis K-Mart, had contacted the Curry County United Way for assistance in collecting and distributing donated goods. He said his store had been flooded with donations, and added, "I would call the community response so far 'outstanding.'"

1967: Melrose school opened its year with 325 students.

Superintendent Willard Moon reported the school maintenance department had remodeled the school over the summer to include a new science department and new commercial department, with the old vocational department renovated into classrooms.

Improvements had been done for $15,000, but Moon said it would add about $20,000 to the value of the facility.
