Rams go 2-1 over weekend in Roswell

ROSWELL — Angie Gonzalez scored four goals, and the Portales Rams survived a tough field in the Goddard Invitational for a winning weekend.

After falling to Artesia 2-1 Friday, Portales (2-1) swept Saturday with a 3-0 win over Silver and a 2-1 overtime thriller over Ruidoso.

“It was tough, but the girls responded well,” Portales coach Ruben Tellez said. “They played defense. We’ve got to work on our touches, and being patient.”

Gonzalez scored all three of Portales’ goals against Silver. Tellez said he and the players were a little surprised at their advantage over the Colts in quickness, and had what he considered 10 good scoring chances.

“We did work the ball very well, and the passing was good. The defensive line did a great job. They did a great job against Artesia too, but just made two mental errors.”

Kimberlie Hay scored a pair of goals for Portales on the weekend, both on headers. She had Portales’ lone tally Friday, then the winner four minutes into overtime Saturday against the Warriors.

“Ruidoso, they held their ground,” Tellez said. “We kept shooting, had about five corner kicks. We couldn’t get any in. I’ve got to give credit to Ruidoso; they played tough.”

Portales returns to action Tuesday with a 3 p.m. match at East Mountain.
