Mustangs blank Hounds in exhibition

ENMU opens season Aug. 31 at Adams State

PORTALES - In what was a tuneup for both Eastern New Mexico University and the University of the Southwest, it was clear the defense was ahead of the offense.

The teams accounted for nine total shots on goal, with a Michael Boone Jr. tally the difference in a 1-0 Mustang exhibition win Saturday at Greyhound Stadium.

The Greyhounds used the afternoon tilt as a chance to check out their bevy of goalkeepers. Ryan Flores, Yuri Nascimiento and Cody Wann each logged between 28 and 33 minutes on the match. Flores had two saves and the goal allowed, while Nascimiento and Wann each had a save.

The visiting Mustangs took the lead with Boone scored on a breakaway in the 14th minute, and Jose Pena Jr. stopped all four ENMU shots on goal for the shutout.

The ball was spread around for the ENMU offense, with 10 different players managing one shot and no player posting more than two.

The games will count for ENMU Aug. 31, when the Greyhounds visit Adams State.

The Greyhounds went 7-8-4 last season, with a 5-6-3 record in the Heartland Conference.
