1942: A man working on his truck while smoking a cigarette escaped injury after tossing a lit cigarette into a puddle of gasoline that he thought was water.

The incident happened at El Vado Service Station at First and Main in Clovis.

The only damage was to the tires of the truck.

1942: The Clovis city clerk's office had a new member.

Matie Gilham and Marguerite Sellars became the co-mothers of a half-inch long horned toad.

Gilham said she wanted to name it Marguerite, after its mother, but Sellars "would not stand for it," the Clovis News-Journal reported.
